Scaloni was the only member of Argentina’s delegation to speak after the match. The players did not address the media.

Argentina braces for a new chapter

Once the initial disappointment fades, Argentina fears the worst.

Scaloni has hinted at walking away before, but this is the first time there appears to be widespread belief inside Argentine soccer that his departure is a real possibility rather than speculation. His exit now seems closer than ever.

Replacing him would be an enormous challenge.

Several candidates have long been linked with the job. Pablo Aimar, Scaloni’s longtime assistant, would be a natural internal option, although many believe he is unlikely to take over. Argentina Under-20 coach Diego Placente is another possibility, while experienced managers Mauricio Pochettino, Marcelo Gallardo, Eduardo Coudet, and even Diego Simeone continue to be mentioned as potential successors.
