Pirlo addresses betting controversy as Italy coaching hopes fade

Caught in a wave of criticism and disappointment over his professional relationship with Russian betting company Fonbet, Andrea Pirlo has turned to Instagram to present his side of the story, while all but confirming that he will not become Italy’s next head coach.

“I learned last night that I am no longer a candidate for the Italian national team,” Pirlo wrote.

His bid to replace Luciano Spalletti took a dramatic turn after questions were raised over his involvement in an advertising campaign for the betting company.

The former midfielder explained:

“Over the past few days, I have watched with great sadness the debate surrounding my name and the possibility of becoming Italy’s head coach. Out of respect for the institutions, the federation and everyone involved, I chose to remain silent until now.

“However, I believe it is necessary to clarify a few points. Throughout my career, first as a player and now as a coach, I have always carried out my work in full compliance with the laws of the countries where I have worked and the contracts I have signed.

“The professional collaboration at the center of the recent controversy stems from my work in the United Arab Emirates and is purely commercial and sporting in nature. To attach political meaning to that collaboration is to attribute beliefs to me that I have never expressed and do not hold.

“I want to thank Maldini and Leonardo for the respect and confidence they have shown me. I know their professionalism, their integrity and the love they have always had for Italian soccer.

“I regret that what should have been a sporting decision was quickly dragged into a public debate that ended up assigning motives and intentions to me that simply are not mine.

“My love for Italy does not depend on holding a position. It is part of my history, my identity and it always will be.”

Italian Federation reviewing Pirlo situation

Pirlo’s decision to speak publicly is separate from the Italian Football Federation’s ongoing evaluation of his candidacy.

Federation president Giovanni Malagò is said to believe the role of Italy head coach carries significant responsibility as a representative of the country on the global stage. As a result, he has personally reviewed Pirlo’s agreement with United FC, along with the sponsorship and image-rights contracts he signed in a personal capacity.

Malagò has also discussed the matter with federation lawyer and head of institutional relations Giancarlo Viglione, who is examining the available documentation.

Maldini meeting scheduled

With a Federal Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, the federation had hoped to arrive with a new head coach already appointed.

Instead, Malagò will meet on Monday with technical director Paolo Maldini and advisor Leonardo to discuss the broader implications of the position.

According to the report, Malagò intends to make clear that the Italy job carries institutional responsibilities that cannot be separated from off-field considerations, particularly in a case such as Pirlo’s.

The situation has reportedly left Maldini feeling that his autonomy in selecting the next coach has been reduced, but Malagò is expected to emphasize that these are institutional responsibilities that neither he nor the officials he appointed can ignore.

As a result, the search for Italy’s next head coach has entered a fresh period of reflection, potentially reopening the race before a final decision is made.
