Portugal vs Ghana preview

A last World Cup for legendary captain Cristiano Ronaldo?

As ever, the headlines surrounding Portugal have been dominated by captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who will officially be playing at the World Cup as a free agent after having his Manchester United contract terminated following a well-publicised interview in which he fiercely criticised the club and several of its key figures. And at 37 years old, this will surely be his last World Cup? Manager Fernando Santos has been keen to stress that Ronaldo’s club situation will have no bearing on his performances for Portugal, for whom he has incredibly scored 117 goals in 191 games. A Seleção have an incredible amount of talent at their disposal but Santos has been criticised for not knowing how best to use it, despite winning Euro 2016, their first ever international title. Portugal needed a playoff to qualify for the World Cup and missed on qualification for the Nations League finals.

Ghana expectations low due to poor pre-World Cup form

Ghana had never qualified for a World Cup until 2002, then proceeded to make it to three tournaments in a row, even reaching the quarter-finals in 2010. Their controversial defeat to Uruguay will make for interesting narrative when the teams meet again later on in this tournament. The Black Stars only just scraped qualification, defeating Nigeria on away goals in a dramatic playoff, and expectations of knockout soccer are fairly low, despite some talented players being on the roster, including Arsenal’s Thomas Partey, Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus and Athletic Club’s Iñaki Williams. Ghana have only won two of their last 12 matches heading into the World Cup and it seems as if head coach Otto Addo doesn’t know what his best team is given that he has chopped and changed his starting XI frequently of late.

Portugal vs Ghana prediction

Portugal do not always manage to turn the firepower they possess into goals but they should prove too strong for a Ghana side who are seen as the outsiders for a top-two spot.

Prediction – Portugal 2-0 Ghana
