The time has come again for the Mexican National Team to look for a new coach. After the disappointing performance in the Qatar World Cup 2022, it is expected that a new coach will arrive at the end of January.

There are many candidates to replace Yon de Luisa, the current interim coach, and the list contains managers who have all had some form of success in South America, which is how the FMF see as the best way to move past this dark period that the team are currently suffering through.

Possible candidates to lead Mexico

Mexico’s last tournament outing at the 2022 World Cup was a failure for Tata Martino, who left in the wake of their elimination in the group stages. It was the first time in 7 World Cup editions that El Tri had failed to get past the first round; a win against Saudi Arabia, a draw with Poland and a loss to Argentina was not sufficient.

As such, many names have been linked with the job, and the list of potential candidates is as follows: Tite, Ricardo Gareca, Marcelo Gallardo, Marcelo Bielsa, Mauricio Pochettino, Diego Alonso, Ricardo Ferretti, Miguel Herrera, Jaime Lozano and Antonio Mohammed.

A strong list of potential candidates

The list of potential Mexico managers incredibly strong: Tite took control of the Brazilian national team from 2016 to 2022, guiding them this year to a quarter-final loss to Croatia. Marcelo Gallardo was River Plate manager between 2014 and 2022, winning the Copa Libertadores with the side; Mauricio Pochettino took Spurs to the Champions League final and Marcelo Bielsa took an irrelevant Leeds United team from the middle of the Championship to the top half of the Premier League in 3 seasons.

It should be noted that this information from Fox Sports only took coaches into account who are currently unemployed. Guillermo Almada and Ignacio Ambriz are also on the horizon for the Mexican National Team despite their commitments to Pachuca and Toluca.

The project of the Mexican National Team will have to be based on tournaments from other confederations such as the Asian Cup, the Copa América or games in Europe since there are no upcoming World Cup qualifiers. In fact, there will be no Olympic Games for the Mexican National Team either as they did not qualify for Paris 2024.
