PSG 38-38 Bayern Munich: the numbers that demand your attention today

If you don’t have anything really important to do later today – and by that I mean a wedding, a funeral, or the likes – then pull up a chair or grab a barstool as I’m guaranteeing you fireworks in Paris... at least of the soccer variety.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich arrive at the Parc des Princes for this Champions League semifinal first leg level on 38 Champions League goals each this season. Not close. Not similar. Identical. And when you dig into how those numbers were built – thanks to a little help from our graphics friends at Sofascore – the symmetry only gets more intriguing.

Update: after tonight’s match PSG have taken the lead 43-42. Yes, you read that right. PSG 5-4 Bayern was the final score.

Bayern Munich’s 6 to 1

Looking back, Bayern’s route to 38 felt like controlled chaos. Six goals against Atalanta, five against APOEL, four against Club Brugge and Real Madrid. They’ve spread the damage widely, scoring in bursts and overwhelming teams in waves. Even their “quieter” nights rarely drop below two. Only Arsenal managed to keep them down to a single goal.

PSG, on the other hand, have had spikes. A stunning seven against Bayer Leverkusen stands out immediately, backed by fives against Tottenham and Chelsea. Their scoring runs came in sharper surges, but when they hit top gear, they go further than anyone else in the competition. The flip side is volatility, with a rare blank against Athletic Club and a few single-goal outings scattered in. But they’ve reached this game firing.

There’s also been an overlap. Both teams put four past Atalanta. Both have dismantled English opposition. Both have shown they can turn elite knockout ties into something that looks, at times, completely unbalanced.

So what does 38-38 actually tell us?

Not much about who wins today or next week in the second leg. But plenty about what’s coming.

This is not shaping up to be a cautious semi-final opener. It’s two sides who don’t just create chances, they multiply them. Two teams who, when they smell momentum, don’t stop at one. Luis Enrique made this point ahead of the game.

Everything about the numbers points one way: goals won’t be the surprise today. The only question is who lands first and who scores most.
