Mauricio Pochettino is a step closer to bidding Paris Saint-Germain farewell. According to reports in Le Parisien, Pochettino’s lawyers and PSG have reached an agreement to terminate the Argentine coach’s contract 12 months before it was due to expire. His departure will be formally announced at the end of the week and could be closely followed by news of who will replace him.

Leading candidates for the PSG job

According to the information coming out of Paris, the decision to part company with Pochettino will be made official before the weekend. Among the candidates to take over the coaching post are Christophe Galtier and Zinedine Zidane.

Nice coach Galtier has already informed his employers of his wish to take the PSG job. His tense relationship with Director of Football Julien Fournier has complicated his chances of remaining at the helm with Nice. PSG’s priority was hiring Zidane, but the ex-Real Madrid coach has other ideas - his dream is to coach France and that has forced newly-appointed Football Adviser Luis Campos to step up the operation to find a replacement for Pochettino.

The Argentine coach’s future at PSG has been on the line for some time. The results haven’t been as positive as the club had hoped. The team won Ligue 1, but stumbled in the Champions League and the Coupe de France. Being eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid at the Bernabéu and letting slip a first leg lead was the moment which sentenced Pochettino’s future.
