PSG defender Sergio Ramos is on the way to a contract renewal

The Spaniard is becoming the leader of the team both on and off the pitch, and in France they are confident he will renew his contract.

After a year to forget, due to his never-ending injuries, Sergio Ramos has finally begun to shine at PSG. The defender is well on the way to sealing the Ligue 1 title, his 28th trophy as a professional footballer and his third with the French club. His renewal is a natural point of order given his great form and in France a feeling of optimism has surrounded the topic for weeks. Al Kehlaïfi is very satisfied with his level and the centre-back feels like he is an important part of the team in the French capital.

Since the second match day of the season, Sergio Ramos has felt like a key member of the team. In that match, against Montpellier, Mbappé and Neymar clashed over taking a penalty in the thrashing of the 2011-12 champions. Mbappé had been chosen as the designated taker as chosen by Galtier, but Neymar broke the rules and decided himself to take the sport kick, generating a huge sense of tension in the squad. It was Ramos who stepped in the mediate and defuse the situation which could well have boiled over, as tends to happen at the club.

Ramos was the star player against Bayern

In October, just before a game against Juventus, Ramos revealed that his intention was to stay at PSG. When asked, the player said he “hoped to sit down at this press conference next year” prompting people to interpret that the defender was happy in France, at least for another year. His contract ends in June, and although there is no offer as of yet, both Club president Al Khelaïfi and Sporting Director Luis Campos can change things very rapidly over the coming days and weeks.

One of the key elements to Ramos’ renewal is the level he showed against Bayern in the Champions League. PSG lost the tie easily to the Germans but Ramos was without a doubt Galtier’s standout player over the two legs. He showed experience, character and leadership, attributes that the French team lack across the pitch in this moment, above all in the elite competitions.

Galtier appreciates Ramos’ qualities

With his new project of young, hungry players in mind, Al Khelaïfi was swaying on his decision to renew the player before the Bayern games. However, the decision has flipped and the president has decided he wants Ramos to stay. Both the player and owner have a cordial relationship and they respect each other mutually, well aware that a renewal would benefit both parties.

Galtier, still the head coach of PSG, has eulogised about the player in his press conferences, calling him ‘the captain without the armband’. His experience in European football, winning 4 Champions Leagues and everything else in between for both club and country, is a quality that can seldom be bought and PSG know it. His future will not be resolved until the end of the season but only unless Ramos says no will the badge on his chest next year not be that of PSG.
