Pumas watches the glories of America and Cruz Azul from afar
The university team won its last league title all the way back in the 2011 Clausura.

During the first decade of the 2000s, Pumas were one of the most successful teams, winning their second championship, the Clausura 2009 title, and later the Clausura 2011. However, after that period of success, the university team fell on hard times and has now endured a 15-year title drought.
During that same span, Club América has won 13 titles across various competitions, including Liga MX, the CONCACAF Champions League, Campeón de Campeones, Supercopa MX, and Copa MX. Meanwhile, Cruz Azul has lifted nine trophies, meaning the university squad has had to watch from afar as their Mexico City rivals continue to celebrate success while they remain stuck in a prolonged slump.
It’s also worth mentioning that Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara claimed five titles in that timeframe, all under Argentine manager Matías Almeyda. To be fair, Pumas have reached three finals during this period—two in the league and one in the CONCACAF Champions League—but they fell short each time, including a loss to the Seattle Sounders in the continental final on the road.
What was Liga MX like the last time Pumas were champions?
Back when Pumas won their last title, Monarcas Morelia were the runners-up. That franchise has since relocated and become Mazatlán FC, while Atlético Morelia now competes in the Liga de Expansión. At that time, promotion and relegation still existed in Liga MX, and in that summer, Necaxa was relegated while Xolos de Tijuana earned promotion to the top flight.
