A look back on the Qatar World Cup 2022 opening ceremony summary

The Qatar 2022 World Cup is proving to be a tournament like no other. For the first time in the 22 editions, this is the first time the FIFA organised competition is being staged in the winter months as a measure to avoid playing in the stifling summer Gulf heat when the temperature can hit in excess of 120 degrees Fahrenheit (that’s the low 50′s in centigrade).

The size of Qatar is also another peculiarity with the distance from the stadium in the most northern tip of the country, the spectacular Al Bayt stadium, to the southermost World Cup stadium Al Janoub stadium in Al-Wakrah being just over 70km.

The Gulf state has also been no stranger to controversy following the 2010 winning bid with the nation’s appalling record involving foreign workers and a legal and cultural environment that is extremely hostile to the LGBTQ community also coming under heavy scrutiny. In the days leading up to the tournament, there was even more drama, with Qatari officials making the last-minute decision to ban sales of beer near stadiums, a Danish broadcasting crew being threatened with violence simply for filming in the street and FIFA president Gianni Infantino making an astonishing speech, seemingly in defence of Qatar hosting the tournament.

Despite this ongoing controversy, which included player and fan protests, surrounding the Qatar World Cup, the action on the pitch has been flooding our screens since Sunday 20 November when the host nation faced and lost to Ecuador. Below you’ll find our user-friendly guide so you can check back on the action that has already taken place in the Gulf with all the group details, participating teams, results and knockout round information.
