Update:

The story has changed. Now they’re allies.

Real Madrid and UEFA are once again moving in lockstep, with club executives regaining influence inside European soccer’s governing body after years of tension and public clashes over the failed Super League project.

After UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin attended Madrid’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabéu earlier this season, the thaw in relations has become increasingly visible. Now José Ángel Sánchez, Real Madrid’s CEO and one of the club’s most influential executives, has traveled to Budapest ahead of the Champions League final.

Club president Florentino Pérez is also expected to attend European soccer’s biggest game of the year.

Champions League changes on the horizon

One of the key topics hanging over the final is the future format of the Champions League beginning in 2027.

UEFA officials and club representatives are expected to hold a series of meetings in Budapest in the coming days as both sides attempt to turn the understanding reached back in February into concrete reforms. While changes to the competition are still being discussed, UEFA’s intention is to preserve the tournament’s core identity.

In a notable shift, UEFA has already sold the Champions League’s audiovisual rights for the 2027-31 cycle, covering four seasons instead of the traditional three-year commercial cycle previously used for the competition.

Budapest becomes soccer’s global capital

Budapest has transformed into the center of the soccer world ahead of Saturday’s final, and Real Madrid’s presence carries symbolic weight.

In recent years, the Spanish giants typically stayed away from UEFA’s marquee events unless they were directly involved on the field. This time, however, club executives are fully engaged behind the scenes as relationships across European soccer continue to evolve.

Adding another layer to the story is the renewed closeness between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, one of this year’s Champions League finalists alongside Arsenal. PSG is once again viewed as a friendly club by Madrid’s leadership after years of fluctuating relations.

The Hungarian capital will also host Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who has not officially begun his new term but is already acting in full control of the Catalan club ahead of July 1.

Relations between Barcelona and Real Madrid remain virtually nonexistent, with tensions between Spain’s two biggest clubs at an all-time high.

Madrid is still expected to submit documentation to UEFA connected to the Negreira case, the ongoing scandal involving payments made by Barcelona to a former vice president of Spain’s refereeing committee.

Transfer market conversations already underway

As always, the Champions League final has become more than just a game.

The event serves as an unofficial meeting ground for agents, executives and clubs preparing for the summer transfer window. Industry insiders understand Real Madrid is expected to be one of the major players in the market this offseason.

Club executives believe Madrid is financially and competitively positioned to strengthen the squad, although the organization does not plan to finalize major moves until after upcoming internal elections.

Several positions have already been identified as priorities.

Right back, center back and central midfield remain the areas marked for reinforcement as Madrid weighs multiple targets ahead of what could become another aggressive summer rebuild.
