Real Madrid pip Barcelona in the race to 100 official titles: who has won what?
Madrid have edged out Barça thanks to their FIFA Club World Cup win and one ‘forgotten’ title from the 1990s.
Real Madrid and Barcelona’s relentless trophy-winning pace shows no signs of slowing. And the race to become the first Spanish club to win 100 official domestic and international titles is over. Los Blancos have become the first of the two rivals to reach that particular milestone thanks to their victory in the FIFA Club World Cup...and their ‘forgotten’ triumph in the 1994 Copa Iberoamericana (Ibero-American Cup).
What was the Copa Iberoamericana?
Admittedly, if you blinked, then you probably missed it as only one edition of the tournament was ever played. The tournament, also called the Copa Iberia for sponsorship reasons, was jointly-created by the Royal Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF) and CONMEBOL in an attempt to strengthen ties between the two organisations. The Copa del Rey winners faced off against the victors of the now defucnt Copa de Oro, which was a type of South American Super Cup which featured the winners of various different South American cup competitions. The Copa de Oro was only marginally more successful than they Copa Iberoamericana, with three editions being played in 1993, 1995 and 1996.
In May 1994, Real Madrid, who had won the 1992-93 Copa del Rey after defeating Real Zaragoza in the final, played a two-legged tie against Copa Oro winners Boca Juniors. The first leg was played on May 19 at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, with Madrid running out 3-1 winners thanks to a brace from José Luis Morales and another goal from Fernando Hierro. The return leg was played six days later at La Bombonera, ending in a 2-1 victory for Boca. With Real Madrid two down, Luis Milla scored the goal that secured the trophy for the Spaniards, led by Vicente del Bosque in a caretaker capacity.

Saturday’s victory in Rabat therefore saw Real Madrid clinch their 100th official title. 14 European Cups/Champions Leagues are by far and away the most in Europe’s top-level competition and are accompanied by 35 league titles, 19 Copa del Rey victories, 12 Spanish Super Cups, one League Cup (discontinued in 1986), one Copa Eva Duarte (the predecessor of the current Spanish Super Cup), two UEFA Cups, five European Super Cups, two Latin Cups (competed for between 1949 and 1957), one Copa Iberoamericana and now eight world titles (three Intercontinental Cups and five FIFA Club World Cups).

The 97 titles on Bareclona’s list of honours are: 26 leagues titles, 31 Spanish Cups, 14 Spanish Super Cups, two League Cups, three Copa Eva Duarte victories, five European Cups/Champions Leagues, four UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups, two Fairs Cups (held between 1955 and 1971), five European Super Cups, three FIFA Club World Cups and two Latin Cups.
Real Madrid have managed to pip the Catalans to three figures after picking up the pace in the last seven seasons. Los Merengues moved 12 trophies ahead (73-61) after winning the Spanish Super Cup in 2003, but Barça then kicked off a period of dominance that saw them move six in front (89-83) before Madrid won the Champions League against city rivals Atlético in Lisbon in 2014.
Madrid ‘remontada’
But the capital outfit are famous for their comebacks and things were no different here. In the last seven seasons, 16 trophies had ended up at the Santiago Bernabéu, compared to just eight at Camp Nou. Barcelona could still reach a ton this season if they win three more trophies (LaLiga, Europa League and Copa del Rey) but they’ve been beaten to the punch by another of Real Madrid’s ‘remontadas’.
