To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Real Madrid have been crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions for the fifth time – technically, although they have won more ‘world titles’ – after defeating Al Hilal in this year’s final in Rabat, Morocco. To the surprise of pretty much everybody, the two teams played out an eight-goal thriller, with Los Blancos seemingly putting themselves out of sight on three separate occasions, only to be pegged back by the persistent Saudis, who took advantage of some questionable defending.

Two goals each from Vinícius Júnior and Fede Valverde, as well as another from the returning Karim Benzema, were ultimately enough to clinch another FIFA Club World Cup win, their first since 2018, which had previously been their last of four triumphs in the space of five years from 2014.

With Real Madrid having now won the competition five times in the last nine seasons, you won’t be shocked to learn that their players – past and present – dominate the top of the list when it comes to those who have the most FIFA Club World Cup victories to their name.

Benzema and Modric move ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ramos

The win over Al Hilal has moved Benzema, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Nacho into joint-second spot having been involved in all five of Los Merengues’ triumphs. They have now moved one ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo (three with Madrid, one with Manchester United), Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos, Isco, Marcelo, Raphaël Varane and Kaylor Navas, who have all left the club in recent times. Marco Asensio’s participation in Morocco has moved him onto four since making his debut for Madrid in 2016.

Toni Kroos won the FIFA Club World Cup playing for Bayern Munich in 2013.

Toni Kroos’ sixth FIFA Club World Cup win: which other trophies has he won with Real Madrid?

But all of the above names trail in the wake of one man: Toni Kroos, who moves onto six victories in the competition. The German, who moved to the Spanish capital in 2014, is another who has been involved in all five of Los Blancos’ victories but he also played for Bayern Munich when they won the tournament in Morocco in 2013.

During time his time in Madrid, Kroos has also won four Champions Leagues, three LaLiga titles, three Spanish Super Cups and three UEFA Super Cups. Could there be more silverware on the way between now and the end of the season?
