Real Madrid player hospitalized after losing 13 pounds
A bout of gastroenteritis has sent Asencio to the hospital after he lost around 13 pounds, with the defender now undergoing treatment and ruled out for the upcoming LaLiga clash against Alavés.
The illness that kept Asencio out of the second leg against Bayern Munich has not eased, and the player was admitted to hospital on Saturday morning for tests and treatment. The news was first reported by Spanish radio station COPE’s Miguel Ángel Díaz and confirmed by AS. Asencio is suffering from a severe virus currently spreading across the Madrid region, with multiple cases reported. He is not the only member of the club affected.
Asencio remaining in hospital
Real Madrid confirmed that Asencio will remain in hospital receiving intravenous fluids and will return home once his symptoms begin to subside. According to AS, the defender has lost around 13 pounds in just a few days due to the illness, making his availability for Tuesday’s league game against Alavés highly unlikely.
Asencio fell ill shortly before the team traveled to Munich, prompting the club to isolate him from the rest of the squad. The decision proved important, as any further spread could have compromised the team ahead of the decisive match. Madrid ultimately fell short of reaching the semifinals, with the red card shown to Camavinga playing a key role in the outcome.
Asencio’s season has been somewhat inconsistent. While injuries to Huijsen, Rüdiger and especially Militão have given him opportunities, he has not been able to establish himself as a regular starter. There were also reports of a dressing-room disagreement with Arbeloa, though the player quickly denied those claims on social media. He is expected to remain with the squad next season alongside Militão and likely Rüdiger, while the club is considering adding another center back, with Alaba set to leave.
