This is a defining night for Real Madrid’s hopes of reaching the Champions League semifinals and, potentially, the May 30 final in Budapest. Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa is expected to lean on the core group he has trusted in recent matches, but the loss to Mallorca has forced him to reconsider, whether that means making changes or sticking with proven veterans over rising talent.

At the heart of the decision lies a familiar tension: experience and authority versus youth and fearless energy.

Defensive doubt: Militão or Huijsen?

Arbeloa’s biggest decisions come in central defense and midfield. At the back, the choice was between Éder Militão and Dean Huijsen, both tasked with containing a dangerous Bayern Munich attack featuring Luis Díaz, Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise and Harry Kane leading the line.

Militão returned against Mallorca after nearly four months out and marked his comeback with a goal. His presence brings speed, physicality and leadership. Huijsen, meanwhile, played a key role in building from the back during the previous round against Manchester City. The young defender offers composure in possession and could help break Bayern’s press, though at the cost of some defensive pace and authority.

In the end, Huijsen partners Antonio Rüdiger, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fran García at fullback.

Midfield conundrum: Thiago or Bellingham?

The other major question comes in midfield, where Arbeloa had one spot available between two players: academy product Thiago Pitarch or Jude Bellingham.

Pitarch has quietly become a perfect fit in Arbeloa’s system. His chemistry with Aurélien Tchouaméni has added balance, freeing up Federico Valverde and Arda Güler to push forward. He acts as the glue in midfield, connecting play efficiently and consistently.

Bellingham, on the other hand, is just returning from injury. Although he joined England during the recent international break, he did not play, making a starting role feel unlikely. He has logged just 47 minutes across his last two appearances for Madrid, including 16 in the derby and 31 against Mallorca.

Real Madrid will also be without several key players. Thibaut Courtois, Ferland Mendy, Dani Ceballos and Rodrygo are all sidelined. Mendy has recovered but is expected to be held back for the return leg in Munich next week.

Discipline could also become a factor. Six players are one yellow card away from suspension and would miss the second leg if booked: Vinícius Jr., Kylian Mbappé, Tchouaméni, Bellingham, Huijsen and Carreras.

Confirmed Real Madrid lineup vs. Bayern Munich

Taking everything into account, Real Madrid’s likely starting XI for this Champions League quarterfinal first leg looks like this:

Lunin; Alexander-Arnold, Rüdiger, Huijsen, Fran García; Valverde, Pitarch, Tchouaméni, Güler; Vinícius and Mbappé

All eyes will be on Arbeloa’s final calls, decisions that could shape Madrid’s path to another European final.
