Nothing is off the table when it comes to Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappé leaving Paris Saint-Germain, it seems, and the Premier League and Liverpool have now entered the room.

PSG’s Mbappé problem

A few months ago, it didn’t appear as if the France captain would be the main protagonist of the summer transfer window after he signed a new deal in Paris until 2024, with the option to extend it until 2025. However, his revelations that he had no intention of taking up that extra year and that he wants to run down his contract with the Ligue 1 champions have changed everything. PSG are not happy and left their star player out of their pre-season tour of Japan, have threatened to leave him on the bench for the entire 2023/24 campaign and generally done everything they can to force him out the door.

A penny for the thoughts of Luis Enrique, who must have been enticed by the prospect of working with Mbappé when he agreed to take over as head coach at the beginning of July. But the 24-year-old’s future is very much up in the air and there only appear to be two possible solutions: he signs a contract extension until 2025 or leaves the club this summer. If the latter doesn’t occur, the Parisians face losing a lot of money.

Liverpool “in talks” with PSG over Mbappé loan

With Real Madrid refusing to blink when it comes to making an offer for Mbappé this summer, one possible option that has been rumoured in England and is gathering momentum is that the player could be about to move to the Premier League on loan.

UK-based broadcaster Sky Sports had previously claimed that a temporary move could be on the cards, while British newspaper the Daily Mirror have now claimed Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are already in talks over a deal that would see Mbappé move to Anfield for 12 months.

How would a Liverpool loan move affect Real Madrid?

The Frenchman’s profile as a goalscorer who drifts infield from the wing would be a perfect fit for the Reds, for whom Mbappé has always shown a great deal of respect. His mother and agent, Fayza Lamari, is also said to “love” the six-time European champions.

Liverpool’s involvement would be as a stop-gap and would ensure Paris Saint-Germain don’t completely lose out financially before Mbappé leaves for free in the summer of 2024. “Liverpool are ready to offer Mbappe a one-year loan deal, which gets him out of Paris, will bring in cash for PSG and enables the 24-year-old striker to complete his dream move to Madrid”, the Mirror point out.

Liverpool won’t play in 2023/24 Champions League

Although Liverpool have been suggested as a possible (temporary) destination for Mbappé, he would have to be prepared to not play in the Champions League for a season.

Jürgen Klopp’s side missed out on the top four in the Premier League in 2022/23 and will instead play in the Europa League after finishing fifth. Mbappé has scored 40 goals in 61 games in the Champions League but has only ever played once in Europe’a second club competition. His sole appearance came as a teenager for Monaco against Tottenham Hotspur in the 2015/16 campaign, when he came off the bench for 34 minutes in a 4-1 defeat at White Hart Lane, setting up a goal for Stephan El Shaarawy.
