Chelsea roster overhaul: Every signing, sale and transfer target

The Xabi Alonso era at Chelsea has finally begun.

While his first competitive match as Chelsea head coach will not come until Monday, August 24, when the Blues visit Álvaro Arbeloa’s Fulham at Craven Cottage, the Spaniard’s first outing on the touchline will be on Tuesday, July 28. Chelsea will face Western Sydney Wanderers in the Sydney Super Cup (5:45 a.m. ET), the first of six preseason friendlies before the start of the 2026-27 Premier League season.

The former Real Madrid manager begins his journey in English soccer with the aim of restoring Chelsea to where the club believes it belongs: competing in Europe. Perhaps even challenging for the Premier League title. After Chelsea finished 10th last season, Alonso faces the difficult task of overseeing yet another rebuild under the BlueCo ownership at Stamford Bridge. But his revolution in west London will extend well beyond tactics.

Alongside several marquee signings already completed, with more expected to follow, Chelsea must also oversee a significant clear-out. Having spent more than $2.3 billion since the American owners took control in 2022, the club is giving Alonso the backing to build a squad in his own image. That is precisely why he was appointed manager. Unlike Enzo Maresca, Liam Rosenior, Mauricio Pochettino, or Graham Potter, Alonso arrives at Cobham with real authority over recruitment.

From Palestra and Rogers... to Stones and Scott?

“I’ve already had a few conversations with Xabi Alonso. For me, it’s important to understand the coach, his personality and how he wants to work. His ideas fit perfectly with the way I see soccer,” Morgan Rogers said during his unveiling as a Chelsea player.

The most expensive signing in Chelsea history, and the second-most expensive in Premier League history, summed up why he and four other elite players have already committed to the Blues, despite the club missing out on European competition this season.

With the arrivals of Marco Palestra, Morgan Rogers, and Maxence Lacroix, alongside the previously completed signings of Valentín Barco, Emmanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda, Chelsea has already spent more than $350 million this summer. Unsurprisingly, the standout deal is the club-record $156 million paid for the former Aston Villa star. Beating Inter Milan and Arsenal to major targets came at a premium. It also marks the fifth straight summer in which Chelsea has surpassed that spending threshold.

Even so, these signings, along with others expected to arrive, suggest Alonso is beginning to reshape Chelsea’s transfer strategy. BlueCo remains committed to signing young talent with resale value, such as 18-year-old Bosnian prospect Kerim Alajbegovic, reportedly valued at $41 million by The Telegraph. But the club is also monitoring experienced market opportunities such as John Stones, who became a free agent after 10 seasons with Manchester City. Earlier this summer, Chelsea also targeted Rayo Vallecano fullback Pep Chavarría.

Stones is not the first experienced player Alonso has wanted to recruit. Chelsea made a serious but unsuccessful attempt earlier in the window to sign Granit Xhaka. The 33-year-old Sunderland captain wanted to reunite with his former Bayer Leverkusen manager, but the Black Cats refused to sell the Switzerland international, who was instrumental in helping the club qualify for the Europa League.

That led Chelsea to pursue Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott as they looked to strengthen the center of midfield. According to British media reports, Bournemouth, who will also play in Europe during the 2026-27 season, rejected Chelsea’s opening $88 million offer because the England international is not for sale. Whether Chelsea returns with a second bid is expected to depend largely on what happens after the World Cup with several of Alonso’s current key players.

Cucurella, Andrey Santos... and Enzo?

Following the departures of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Andrey Santos to Manchester United, Chelsea could still lose more key members of the squad.

The most obvious case is Enzo Fernández. Alonso has publicly stated his desire to keep the Argentine midfielder at Stamford Bridge. However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, “Chelsea remains open to Enzo Fernández signing a new contract, but if the club’s £120 million ($164 million) valuation is met, he could leave this summer.”

The World Cup runner-up is not the only Chelsea player attracting attention across Europe. Pedro Neto has reportedly emerged as a target for Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously coached the Portuguese winger at Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Mail. Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports that Cesc Fàbregas’ Como has submitted a $35 million offer, including add-ons, for Trevoh Chalobah.

Regardless of any surprise departures, trimming the squad has become a priority and almost a necessity for Chelsea’s sporting department.

Penders, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi, Aaron Anselmino, and Datro Fofana have all returned from loan spells, and Chelsea must find solutions for players who do not fit Alonso’s plans. The current first-team squad includes more than 30 players. Several of the club’s 10 center backs, including Disasi and Benoît Badiashile, are available for transfer. Others, such as Marc Guiu, are expected to leave on loan to gain regular playing time. Players like Nicolas Jackson and Malo Gusto could also be sold to raise funds.

For now, despite several World Cup participants still being absent, Chelsea confirmed on Friday that “a group of 27 players will depart London for Sydney to begin our preseason tour of Australia and Asia.” The traveling squad includes one of the club’s new signings, Marco Palestra, along with several academy players.

Ambition, wingbacks, and set pieces

Expectations surrounding Xabi Alonso are sky-high, especially after Chelsea supporters heard his measured yet ambitious vision.

“Time will tell, but our goal and ambition is to reach as high as possible. Time will tell where we deserve to be. Right now it’s about getting started, making the right decisions, being smart with those decisions, and building a strong squad. Once you have a good team, you have to create the style of soccer and the way we want to play and compete,” Alonso told Stan Sport Football..

The former Real Madrid boss wants to bring the style and tactical modernity that made him a champion at Bayer Leverkusen to Stamford Bridge: attractive, attacking, vertical soccer that excites Chelsea fans, something he was unable to fully implement at the Santiago Bernabéu.

That starts with recruiting players suited to his preferred back-three system with attacking wingbacks, such as Palestra, Quenda, and Morgan Rogers, while also placing a major emphasis on set pieces. Modern soccer is increasingly decided in those moments, and Alonso knows it.

The arrival of Austin MacPhee, first reported by journalist John Townley, is no coincidence. Many consider it Chelsea’s most important signing of the summer. After serving as Unai Emery’s set-piece specialist at Aston Villa for the past five seasons, while also working with Portugal at the World Cup, MacPhee is expected to significantly strengthen Chelsea’s dead-ball play.
