Real Madrid have initiated the process for convening the next elections for its presidency and Board of Directors. The announcement was made on the afternoon of Thursday, January 2, via an official statement.

The statement specified that the election process will formally begin next week, on January 7, at 5:30 p.m. This marks the start of the procedure for electing the club’s new president and Board of Directors.

The current term of Florentino Pérez and his Board of Directors, which began on April 13, 2021, after no rival candidates contested the last election, is set to expire this spring.

Pérez has served as president during two periods: first from July 17, 2000, to February 27, 2006, and then from June 1, 2009, to the present.

Will Florentino Pérez step down as Real Madrid president?

He is widely expected to be re-elected without opposition, as has been the case in previous elections. The 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021 elections were all resolved within thirteen days, as Pérez was the sole candidate following the application deadline.

According to the club’s statutes, the election process involves strict regulations.

The announcement must be posted on the designated notice board at the club’s headquarters and published in at least two Madrid-based newspapers. Candidates have ten days from the official announcement to submit their applications, as outlined in Article 40.A of the statutes.

The eligibility requirements for candidacy as Real Madrid president are as follows:

  • Be a Spanish citizen of legal age with full legal capacity.
  • Be up to date on all membership obligations, including payment of fees.
  • Not be subject to any disqualification from holding management positions.
  • Not hold managerial roles at other football clubs or be active as a player, referee, coach, or technical staff member at the time of candidacy.
  • Have been a club member for at least 20 years (15 years for vice president candidates and 10 years for other board members).
  • Provide a bank guarantee.

Furthermore, each candidacy must include a minimum of 10 members and a maximum of 20, with one designated as the presidential candidate. These rules ensure the integrity and exclusivity of the election process, maintaining the club’s longstanding traditions.
