After failing to land Atlético’s star striker, Madrid moved quickly in the market and disrupted two of their city rival’s summer plans.

Real Madrid’s $175 million transfer ‘revenge’
Real Madrid have become the driving force of this summer’s transfer market. After two seasons without a major trophy, Florentino Pérez has wasted little time reshaping the squad, moving aggressively to strengthen both defense and midfield following his recent re-election as club president.
Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella are all set to wear the famous white shirt next season. Yet despite those additions, Pérez suffered a major setback in his pursuit of Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez.
The Madrid president reportedly offered $175 million for the Argentine forward, but Atlético immediately rejected the proposal and pointed to the player’s more than $500 million release clause. The response was not limited to negotiations. Atlético’s official X account appeared to mock the offer publicly, adding another layer to the rivalry between the Spanish capital’s two giants.
The failed pursuit of Álvarez appears to have had consequences elsewhere in the market.

Bernardo Silva changed course at the last minute
Bernardo Silva had reportedly been on the verge of joining Atlético Madrid, with Diego Simeone’s club believing the deal was effectively completed. However, the Portuguese midfielder became a priority target after José Mourinho was appointed Real Madrid manager.
According to the report, Mourinho specifically requested Silva, prompting Madrid to enter the race. Just as the midfielder was preparing to finalize his move to Atlético, he instead accepted Madrid’s proposal. Within a matter of hours, the transfer swung dramatically in favor of the Santiago Bernabéu club.

Cucurella was another Atlético priority
Marc Cucurella represented another key objective for Atlético this summer.
The left-back position has been identified as an area requiring reinforcement, but Chelsea’s valuation of more than $58 million proved difficult for Atlético to meet. Negotiations never reached the level demanded by the Premier League club.
When Madrid encountered complications in their pursuit of Joško Gvardiol, they quickly shifted their attention to Cucurella. An agreement with both Chelsea and the Spanish international was reportedly reached within 24 hours, securing another player who had been high on Atlético’s wishlist.
The result is a transfer window that has taken an increasingly personal tone. Atlético rejected Madrid’s massive offer for Álvarez and publicly laughed off the proposal. Now, Madrid have responded by securing two players that Simeone’s side had targeted, significantly altering Atlético’s summer plans.
