Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde punched opponent Álex Baena in the face after Saturday’s match at the Bernabéu, according to Villarreal sources. Los Groguets say they have video footage of the assault, and statements have already been given to the police over the incident.

Baena said to have made comments about Valverde’s son

Valverde and Baena exchanged cross words on several occasions during Madrid and Villarreal’s LaLiga clash in the Spanish capital, which the visitors won 3-2.

After the game, as the away side’s players boarded their team bus, Valverde is said to have approached Baena and punched the 21-year-old. Shortly after the alleged assault, Villarreal matchday delegate Xisco Nadal posted on Twitter: “Fede Valverde, you’re a thug and a coward.” He later deleted the tweet.

According to the Spanish radio station Cadena SER, Madrid are not denying that the incident took place. Valverde’s version of events, per SER, is that Baena made offensive remarks about the Uruguayan’s son, both during and after the match.

Baena: “TOTALLY UNTRUE THAT I SAID THAT”

Baena has strongly denied this. Taking to social media, the winger wrote: “I’m really happy with the team’s fantastic win at a ground like the Santiago Bernabéu, but at the same time I’m really sad about the attack I suffered after the game, and I’m surprised at what’s being said about me. IT’S TOTALLY UNTRUE THAT I SAID THAT.”

Valverde and Baena had previous

Valverde and Baena also clashed during Madrid and Villarreal’s Copa del Rey last-16 tie in January, which Los Blancos won 3-2 after coming from two goals down at the Estadio de la Cerámica. During that game, Baena made mock ‘crying’ gestures at the 24-year-old, leading to a verbal dispute between the pair.
