Ricardo Pepi scores Champions League winner for PSV: how many Americans have scored in the UCL?
The Dutch side are in a great position to qualify for the Round of 16 after the USMNT striker’s injury-time header against Sevilla.
PSV Eindhoven’s Champions League victory over Sevilla was a game to forget for Mexico international Hirving Lozano, but one to remember for CONACAF rival Ricardo Pepi of the USMNT.
Pepi’s sends PSV Eindhoven into the Round of 16
While Lozano incurred a one-match suspension that will see him miss his team’s matchday six clash against Arsenal and then picked up an injury, Pepi came off the bench in the closing stages to complete a dramatic turnaround in Spain, heading in a stoppage-time winner after his team had been 2-0 down with just a quarter of the game left to play.
As a result, PSV are all but certain to qualify for the Round of 16, with Arsenal racing into a big early lead over Lens, who can still finish on the same number of points but are worse off in the head-to-head fixtures between the two teams.
Who is the top American scorer in the Champions League?
Despite Christian Pulisic being a regular starter for AC Milan, Pepi becomes the first American to score in this season’s Champions League and the 12th in total. “Captain America”, perhaps unsurprisingly, leads the way with seven goals (for Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea), with DaMarcus Beasley, who also has PSV connections, second on four.
