Rummenigge warns Bayern to “stay grounded” ahead of return leg against Real Madrid

The former Bayern president is urging caution ahead of Wednesday’s quarter final decider: “Real Madrid have given us enough headaches in Munich.”

Update:

Former Bayern Munich president Karl‑Heinz Rummenigge is urging the team to stay focused and avoid “getting carried away” ahead of this week’s Champions League quarterfinal return leg against Real Madrid at Allianz Arena.

Bayern head into the match with a slim 2–1 advantage from the first leg, and Rummenigge reminded everyone that the Spanish giants have caused them “more than enough headaches in Munich.”

Don’t think the tie is over, warns Rummenigge

Speaking with DAZN, the longtime Bayern executive said he senses “a bit too much excitement” around the club right now. “Honestly, I don’t like it. Real Madrid has already given us plenty of trouble here in Munich, and I think it’s worth remembering that.”

Rummenigge pointed back to Bayern’s 2014 Champions League semifinal under Pep Guardiola. Bayern lost the first leg 1–0 in Madrid — and the second leg at home turned into a nightmare. “Sergio Ramos scored twice on set pieces in the first 15 minutes, and the game was basically over,” he said, recalling the eventual 4–0 defeat. Cristiano Ronaldo added two more goals that night.

Looking ahead to the second leg next Wednesday, Rummenigge stressed that Bayern must be at their absolute best. “We need to play with total focus, a lot of intelligence, and try to replicate the level we showed on Tuesday.”

Belief in Bayern’s potential — and big praise for Manuel Neuer

Despite his warnings, Rummenigge sounded optimistic when asked whether Bayern has the talent to win the Champions League again. “The atmosphere around the club reminds me of 2020, when we won it,” he said.

If Bayern reaches the semifinals, he expects another tough challenge — likely against PSG or possibly Liverpool. “Right now, it looks like PSG, the defending Champions League winners. One thing is clear: winning the Champions League in its current format, with this level of competition, is getting harder every year.”

Rummenigge also singled out goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for his standout performance in Madrid. “On Tuesday, there was a giant in goal,” he said. “For me, Manuel Neuer is the most important signing this club has made in the last 15 to 20 years. Robert Lewandowski was hugely important too, and of course others have come along since. But it’s no coincidence that with Neuer, we’ve won everything there is to win in soccer.”
