Liverpool’s faltering season meets a defining night in Paris, where Salah’s legacy and future collide under Champions League lights.

Salah’s last stand in Paris? Much is on the line for Liverpool’s Egyptian King
If there is one player capable of halting Liverpool’s downward spiral, it is Mohamed Salah. At least based on his history at the club and ignoring his performances so far this season.
The Egyptian forward heads to Paris for what could be one of his final European nights in the Champions League – a competition he has dominated for years, yet surprisingly lifted only once, in 2019. Some – maybe those that ignore recent form – still see him as the primary threat to Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning European champions and the very side that eliminated Liverpool last year in a breathtaking, nerve-shredding tie.
That night – March 11, 2025 – Salah left Anfield with his head bowed. PSG shattered Liverpool’s status as Europe’s form team, a mantle they held until Luis Enrique’s side crossed their path. Salah’s performance fell short. Nuno Mendes proved a relentless tormentor, forcing the winger off in the first leg and winning every duel in the return, where the Portuguese fullback overwhelmed him entirely.
Time has moved quickly since. Salah flirted with leaving a year ago but ultimately extended his contract until 2027. What once seemed an unbreakable union shifted dramatically last December. In the mixed zone, without warning, he aimed a pointed remark at Arne Slot after his third consecutive game on the bench, making a split appear inevitable. The Dutch manager, under mounting pressure from poor results, sidelined him for a week. The Africa Cup of Nations and the Christmas break helped ease tensions.
Months later, in March, Salah confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Even if widely expected, the announcement sent shockwaves through Anfield, especially in a campaign where results have faltered. The team’s place in next season’s Champions League is far from secure – currently sitting fifth in the Premier League – and last weekend, on the eve of the clash in Paris, they suffered a crushing defeat to Manchester City. The 4–0 loss at the Etihad has deepened the crisis engulfing the Merseyside club.
Salah’s legacy at Liverpool is beyond dispute: two Premier League titles, one Champions League, an FA Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, a Club World Cup, two Carabao Cups, and a Community Shield. He has won everything. And tonight, at the Parc des Princes, Liverpool’s slim hopes may rest once more on his boots.
Would the real Mo Salah please turn up
Yet the numbers are troubling. Last season’s Premier League top scorer with 29 goals in 38 matches, Salah has managed just 10 goals this campaign – five in the league – along with three in nine European appearances. Doubts over his form are growing louder, and few believe that tonight against PSG will become one of those defining, heroic nights that turn a tie. Anything can happen – but time and physical decline rarely lie.
For years, Salah was Qatar’s unattainable dream. His influence across the Middle East and immense popularity in Africa caught the emirate’s attention, even leading to negotiations two years ago as a potential successor to Lionel Messi. The arrival of Luis Enrique changed everything. The Spanish coach rejected the idea of star-centric recruitment and shut down any move. Now, despite Salah’s contractual situation, PSG have shifted focus to other targets.
His future now hangs in the balance. Europe, Major League Soccer, and Saudi Arabia – ready to offer vast riches – await his decision. Salah has nothing left to prove. He has earned the right to choose his own ending. Still, the most devoted believers in the “Egyptian King” hope that tonight is not the penultimate time he wears Liverpool’s shirt with the Champions League badge. Only he can stop PSG from becoming Europe’s dominant force for a second consecutive year.
