Salvador Cabañas: “América is the most difficult club to play for”

Las Águilas was the last club in ‘Chava’s’ career. He spent three years there, playing over a hundred games, and leaving a mark on the club.

Ciudad de MéxicoUpdate:

Salvador Cabañas signed with América in 2006. Three years later in 2009 he was attacked and shot in a bar in Mexico City - an incident which effectively ended his career. However, in that short period when he belonged to the Eagles, he left a mark on the fans that saw him play. The Paraguayan played 160 games and scored 98 goals; he also ended as the top goal scorer in two editions of the Copa Libertadores, in 2007 and 2008.

On Wednesday, Chava visited the club’s facilities, spoke in front of the club’s cameras, detailing his time in América. He greeted the coaching staff and stayed to chat with a few of the players such as Henry Martín, Richard Sánchez, Miguel Layún, among others.

It’s really nice to be back here, at the old training ground. I spent a lot of time here training - back then with players like Carlos Rojas, El Memo... The greatness of this club - for everything they have won, is hard to describe. It’s a huge club, and it’s something that they have to retain so that the fans keep coming and see what they have won. The excitement that América generates,” he explained. “This is the most difficult club to play for. Here there is a lot of pressure from all sides - from the directors, the coaching staff, team mates - who are always expected to get results. They have to show people why they have come to play for América”.
