The ex-Argentina striker, who retired due to health reasons in 2021, confirmed a new injury nightmare on social media.

Sergio “Kun” Agüero has ruptured his Achilles tendon after taking part in a veterans match for players over 35 with Independiente earlier this week.

The former Argentina international confirmed the injury himself on social media shortly after undergoing medical tests.

“I had an MRI and it confirmed that I tore my tendon. Tomorrow I will begin further exams and I will need surgery,” Agüero said in an Instagram story.

Injury occurred during senior match

The injury happened during a Torneo Senior match between Independiente and River Plate. Agüero went down during a play and immediately required medical attention from both teammates and opponents.

He was carried off the field by players from both sides before being transported to the Sanatorio Otamendi in Buenos Aires.

Diagnosis confirmed in hospital

Once at the hospital, medical tests confirmed a complete rupture of the Achilles tendon in his left leg.

At 37 years old, Agüero had been enjoying occasional appearances in these senior matches following his retirement from professional football at the end of 2021, when he was playing for Barcelona and was forced to step away due to a ventricular arrhythmia diagnosis.

This latest injury could now bring an end to his time on the pitch altogether.
