Sergio Ramos was sent off late on as his Sevilla side were beaten 2-1 by high-flying Real Sociedad.

The 37-year-old received the 29th red card of his illustrious career for a late sliding tackle on Brais Méndez. The referee originally awarded Ramos a yellow card, but upgraded it to a red after consulting the VAR monitor.

He was one of two Sevilla players to be sent off, following Jesus Navas to the locker room. The 38-year-old Navas picked up the first red card of his 20-year professional career.

Real Sociedad opened the scoring in the third minute with an own goal from Marko Dmitrovic, before Umar Sadiq doubled their advantage on 22 minutes. Youssef En-Nessyri got one back in the second half but Sevilla were unable to find an equaliser.

Who has the LaLiga red card record?

Sunday’s red card was the 29th picked up by Ramos, who is known for his feisty temperament and front-foot defending style. This latest dismissal was the 21st in LaLiga, the most recorded by any player in the competition’s history.

In fact, Ramos’ all competitions tally of 29 is the 21st century record. Only Rafael Marquez (21) and Felipe Melo (20) have racked up 20 or more dismissals.

This latest red was Ramos’ first since returning to hometown club Sevilla in the summer.

The absence of both Ramos and Navas gives Sevilla manager Diego Alonso a selection headache for next weekend’s visit of Villarreal. Sevilla are currently in 15th, four points outside of the relegation places, and they have not won in the league since September.
