Hosts Suriname may be the underdog for tonight fixture, but there have shown before that they can upset more illustrious names. Last summer group leaders Jamaica travelled to Suriname and were held to a draw, with the home side controlling more of the possession and registering twice as many shots on target.

Much of Surname’s attacking output will depend on the performance of Sheraldo Becker, who has starred for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga this season. The pacy forward has registered seven goals in the German top flight this campaign and could be a key player this evening.

Mexico

A Wold Cup finals mainstay, Mexico are the favourites to lift the upcoming Gold Cup for a record eighth time. In the first game against Suriname the Mexicans ran out 3-0 winners, but coach Diego Cocca will be taking the team for the first time in a competitive fixture. Cocca was appointed after an underwhelming showing from Mexico at the 2022 World Cup, in which they were eliminated in the group stages.

Cocca has opted to travel to Suriname was a thin squad, taking only players currently featuring for Liga MX sides for the trip to Paramaribo. This means there is no Guillermo Ochoa in the Mexican net for Thursday’s game. It is not yet clear which of Carlos Acevedo or José Antonio Rodríguez will start in Ochoa’s place.

While Mexico are most successful nation in the history of CONCACAF, Suriname’s record in the tournaments is much more limited. The South American nation have competed in the Gold Cup just twice before in their history and are yet to make it out of the group stages in either of their previous appearances.

This tournament is the first time that they have been drawn against El Tri, meaning that last summer’s 3-0 Mexican victory is the only previous meeting of the two sides.
