Mexico and the USMNT will face off in Phoenix, Arizona later today and it will be the second time in recent history that two nations have come up against each other. The first was in the World Baseball Classic and the second is in football at the State Farm Stadium.

The rivalry transcends a single sport and extends into various aspects of life. In March of this year, it was the Mexicans who walked away with a win in the World Baseball Classic in a historic result for the country. The key of that battle, that finished 11-5 to Mexico, was Joey Meneses.

Cabajoey is the key

The first base of the Washington Nationals was the figurehead of the team that was led by Benjamín Gil: he scored 5 out of the 11 home runs for Mexico and assisted in 3 others. ‘CabaJoey’ became an instant idol for the baseball-loving fans in the country.

Remembering back to that famous day against the USA, the Mexican baseball team sent their football counterparts some advice on how to get the better of their rivals in the upcoming game. In a tweet, the team said that El Tri “need their own ‘CabaJoey’ to win against the USMNT” and put an end to the dominance that they have had over the Mexicans for a long time.

A long winless run for Mexico

Perhaps Diego Cocca’s side needs a bit of luck against the USA, as El Tri are currently on a winless run against them that stretches to more than a staggering 1,400 days. The exact figure is 1,474, as the last win came on 6 September 2019, when Gerardo Martino’s team beat the US 3-0 in the MetLife Stadium. Since then, they have played each other 4 times, losing three and drawing one.

A new edition of the ‘Concacaf Clásico’ will start at 10:00pm ET (here’s how to watch). After that, both teams will go again on 15 June in Las Vegas, in the second semi-final of the Concacaf Nations League, which will be held in Denver, Colorado.
