The astonishing Premier League record that could soon be broken
Nottingham Forest are on the verge of making Premier League history after firing Sean Dyche less than four months into his tenure.
Sean Dyche became the second Premier League manager to be fired on Wednesday, losing his job at Nottingham Forest just hours after Thomas Frank was dismissed by Tottenham Hotspur.
If you thought Frank, who lasted eight months in London, had it rough, spare a thought for Dyche, who was fired less than four months after being appointed Forest manager on October 21 last year. Even then, however, the former Burnley and Everton boss lasted longer than his predecessor, Ange Postecoglou.
A revolving door at the City Ground
It’s become a recurring theme at the City Ground under current owner Evangelos Marinakis, and Forest could soon set a presumably unwanted record for most permanent managers in a season - four - in Premier League history.
Nuno Espírito Santo, now at West Ham, began the 2025-26 campaign in the dugout after leading Forest to a surprise Europa League qualification. The Portuguese, however, left his role just weeks into the season on September 9 after a breakdown in his relationship with Marinakis.
Postecoglou immediately replaced him but endured a disastrous tenure, the shortest of any permanent manager in Premier League history. In the Australian’s 39 days in charge, Forest failed to win any of their eight games, losing six of them.
Dyche improves results but not enough
Dyche fared significantly better, leading the Reds out of the relegation zone. Even so, 10 wins, six draws, and nine defeats in 25 games were not enough to keep his job.
According to reports, Marinakis had been concerned about the team’s declining level of performance in recent weeks. Before Wednesday’s goalless draw against bottom club Wolves, Dyche told the media: “If the owner wants to make a change, that’s up to him. That’s the way football is now.”
The potential record breaker
According to Sky Sports reporter Anton Toloui, Forest are looking to appoint a new manager quickly, with Vito Pereira, who was himself fired by Wolves in November, the favorite.
If the Portuguese, or anyone else, is appointed on a permanent basis, Nottingham Forest will become the first Premier League club to have four permanent managers in a single season.
