The biggest transfers still to happen in Liga MX’s Clausura 2024
With the Clausura 2024 now underway, clubs are still working to tie up their transfer business for the new tournament.
With the Clausura 2024 underway and due to head into matchday two on Friday, Liga MX clubs are still in the process of shaping their squads for the tournament. We take a look at three of the biggest-name moves that remain in the works:
Will Chicharito finally rejoin Chivas?
Early in January, Chivas Guadalajara fans were overjoyed to learn that Mexico great Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández is line to re-sign for the club, 13 and a half years after he left for Premier League giants Manchester United.
Since then, negotiations have been ongoing between Chivas and Hernández, who is a free agent after parting company with MLS franchise Los Angeles Galaxy.
The 35-year-old striker, who scored 29 goals in 79 Chivas appearances between 2006 and 2010, this week strongly hinted that he is on the verge of completing his return to Guadalajara, telling an interview at the Kings League Americas draft that he will soon be “in the best city in Mexico”.
Who’s going to sign Cruz Azul outcast Escobar?
After nearly five years with Cruz Azul, defender Juan Escobar is to depart the nine-time Mexican champions, after being deemed surplus to requirements by the club’s newly-appointed head coach, Martín Anselmi.
The Paraguay international, who helped Cruz Azul to their most recent league title in 2021, is now busy looking for a new club together with his agent. Sources have told AS México that Toluca are an option for Escobar, who is also thought to be interesting Pumas. The 28-year-old, who has been capped 12 times by his country, could leave the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes on an initial loan deal.
América to bring in Arteaga from Belgium?
Since winning their 14th Mexican championship in December, Club América haven’t done much incoming transfer business: only Cristian ‘Chicote’ Calderón and Ilian Hernández have joined Las Águilas, who began their title defence with a 2-0 win over Tijuana last Saturday.
One man who could follow Calderón and Hernández to the Estadio Azteca is Mexico full-back Gerardo Arteaga, who has been at Belgian club Genk since 2020. The Santos Laguna youth product would certainly serve to bolster André Jardine’s defensive options.
