Gerardo Tata Martino parted ways with the Mexico national team following the failure to reach the knockout stages at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Now the soccer federation of the country is looking to start a new cycle under a new head coach and start preparing the team for the 2026 campaign.

Mexico will co-host the next World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, so they have already secured a spot in the tournament. It is important for a new head coach to be appointed early to be able to start preparing the team that will represent the country. According to the president of the Mexican Soccer Federation, Yon de Luisa, a new head coach will be appointed in the next two months to start working with the new generation.

The list of candidates

One of the top candidates that could take over the managerial job is Guillermo Almada; but if Mexico wants him, they need to make an offer quickly because the Ecuador national team is also interested in the 53-year-old. Almada is an experienced head coach in Liga MX and he recently won the championship with Pachuca (Apertura 2022) and managed Santos Laguna from 2019-2021.

Almada is reportedly interested in coaching El Tri, but he is not the only option on the list. De Luisa returned this week to Mexico to start analyzing each candidate that is available from Liga MX and other parts of the world. Marcelo Bielsa has also been rumored to be on that list, but the 67-year-old is currently keen to accept the Uruguay job that was left vacant by Diego Alonso.
