The Europa League is the second most important club tournament in Europe and the draw for this year’s edition was closely followed by several Mexican players, who learned who they will be up against in the group stage. Four Mexican players will be hoping to win the trophy to qualify for next season’s Champions League with their respective teams.

Andrés Guardado with Betis, Santiago Giménez with Feyenoord, Diego Lainez with Braga and Érick Gutiérrez with PSV hope to be the protagonists for their clubs in this year’s tournament in which Mexico is well represented.

Érick Gutierrez - PSV Eindhoven

The Dutch side were failed to qualify for the Champions League after falling to Scottish outfit Rangers in the play-offs. PSV landed in Group A with Arsenal, Bodo-Glimt and Zurich. It’s a relatively straightforward group and PSV along with Arsenal are the favourites and should have no problem getting into the next round.

Andrés Guardado - Betis

Guardado, the Little Prince and Betis ended up in Group C. The Verdiblancos will face Roma, Ludogorets and HJK. On paper, it looks like it will be between the Andalusians and the Italians as to who will finish in first place in the group.

Diego Lainez - Braga

Diego Lainez aims to have a good season with the Portuguese team and being given minutes in the Europa League will be vital to get to Qatar 2022 in top shape. Braga are in Group D with Sweden’s Malmö, Union Berlin and Belgian revelation Union St Gilloise.

Santigo Gimenez - Feyenoord

Finally, Santiago Giménez and Feyenoord will be in Group F along with Lazio, Midtjylland and Austrian side, Sturm Graz. The contest for top spot will be against the Italians, but the Danish club cannot be ruled out - they currently are in fourth place in the Danish Superliga.

It should be noted that the teams who finish third in the Champions League group stage will go into the Round of 16 of the Europa League, so in theory, Napoli or Ajax could possibly join the tournament (they are both in Group A with Liverpool) - if that happens, there would be another Mexican representative in the Europa League - Hirving Lozano with Napoli or Jorge Sánchez with Ajax.
