The first matchday of the Apertura 2026 in Liga MX is in the books — and Mexican soccer just made history. For the first time in 28 years, the league opened a season without a single draw, breaking a streak that stretched all the way back to the Invierno 1998 tournament.

A look back at the last time it happened

The previous draw‑free Matchday 1 came on August 1–2, 1998, when América opened the season with a win over León. That weekend featured victories by:

Atlante 2–1 Toluca

Monterrey 1–0 Atlas

Cruz Azul 4–0 Puebla

Necaxa 2–0 Pumas

Chivas 3–1 Santos Laguna

Morelia 2–1 Tecos

Pachuca 3–1 Tigres

Celaya 3–1 Toros Neza

Not a single match ended level — a rarity in modern Liga MX.

Fast‑forward to 2026, and Matchday 1 delivered the same drama‑heavy, draw‑free energy:

Necaxa 2–1 Atlante

Tijuana 3–1 Tigres

Cruz Azul 3–2 Atlético San Luis

Atlas 3–2 León

Puebla 1–0 Juárez

The weekend wrapped with wins by:

América 1–0 Querétaro

Pachuca 3–0 Pumas

Toluca 2–0 Chivas

Monterrey 3–2 Santos Laguna

Every match produced a winner — just like in 1998.

Liga MX also recently completed a full matchday without a 0–0 result. During the Clausura 2025, there were draws, but all finished 1–1:

  • Mazatlán vs. Juárez
  • Cruz Azul vs. Atlas
  • Monterrey vs. Puebla

Meanwhile, América, Toluca, Tigres, Chivas, Pumas, and León all picked up wins.
