The Vinícius Júnior contract situation: what to know
Vinícius is set for showdown talks with Real Madrid, as player and club seek to end a contract impasse that has lasted a year.
The Vinícius Júnior contract extension has been a complicated issue that Real Madrid has been dealing with for quite some time, specifically since the conclusion of the Club World Cup in summer 2025. That was when the last confirmed face-to-face meeting took place between the player’s representatives and the club in an effort to finalize a new agreement. It was also the moment when negotiations unexpectedly stalled, despite both sides appearing to be on the verge of signing. Talks are now set to resume from that point.
How much money does Vinícius want?
At that final meeting in Valdebebas following the Club World Cup, the Brazilian significantly lowered his original salary demands for a new deal, which had been close to €30 million ($35 million) per year. Real Madrid, for its part, improved its initial offer. Despite the wide gap that existed at the outset, the two sides eventually moved remarkably close to an agreement, with their positions nearly aligned. Then everything came to a halt during that July 2025 meeting, just when a signature seemed imminent. Curiously, neither side was willing to give ground in the final stretch, even though the deal appeared almost complete.
Vinícius ultimately asked for a net salary of €20 million ($23 million) per season, an increase that is not particularly dramatic, only about €5 million ($6 million) more than he had been earning under his previous contract extension. That agreement was signed in 2022, although it was not publicly announced until more than a year later, on October 31, 2023.
Back in 2022, Vinícius signed a five-year extension running through 2027. The deal guaranteed him €75 million ($86 million) net over the life of the contract, averaging €15 million ($17.2 million) per season, though it was structured on an escalating scale. He started out earning around €10 million ($11.5 million) annually and is set to finish the contract at roughly €18 million ($21 million) per year. In addition, the contract includes a clause that awards him an extra €2 million ($2.3 million) per season after winning FIFA’s The Best award. The same bonus would have applied had he won the Ballon d’Or.
Image rights also key to a Real deal
There are now far more moving parts in the negotiations than there were during the initial talks. One issue is the possibility of a renewal bonus, something comparable to the signing bonus Kylian Mbappé received when he joined Madrid. With Vinícius edging closer to the end of his contract, such a demand could become part of the discussions. Image rights are also expected to play a major role.
Those image rights represent a significant portion of the financial equation. Mbappé reportedly controls nearly 100% of his own image rights, a structure that makes his salary package more manageable for the club. Vinícius is seeking a similar arrangement. And it is easy to understand why. He is currently one of the most marketable athletes in the world, with endorsement deals from 18 international brands, including Clear, Omo, Gatorade, Rexona, PlayStation, Apple, Pepsi, Betnacional, Vivo, Prada Eyewear, Dubai Tourism, Boss Fragrances, UNESCO, Nike, Havaianas, Visa, and Marriott Bonvoy.
Vinícius remains under contract through 2027, and under FIFA regulations he will be free to negotiate openly with other clubs from next January. However, it has not gone unnoticed that there may already be an understanding regarding the player’s future following Madrid’s signing of Yan Diomande, who shares the same agent, Frederico Pena. It is entirely plausible that Vinícius’ long-term situation was also discussed while the Diomande deal was being finalized.
The latest indications from sources close to the Brazilian suggest that Vinícius intends to remain at Madrid and continue his career at the club after signing a new contract. Months ago, this newspaper also reported that the player’s preference was to stay even if an extension could not be agreed upon and that, in such a scenario, he would leave as a free agent next summer.
In any case, those unanswered questions should become much clearer after the face-to-face meeting scheduled to take place imminently between the player, new head coach José Mourinho, and Madrid’s top decision-makers.
