“This can’t happen”: Luis Figo reacts to Real Madrid locker room fight and Mourinho rumors

The former Real Madrid and Barcelona star discusses the Valverde-Tchouaméni alteraction, José Mourinho and why El Clásico still means more than ever.

As one of LaLiga’s ambassadors and with another high-stakes El Clásico approaching, Luis Figo took center stage at an event announcing the league’s new global sponsorship agreement with Duracell.

But despite his legendary ability to dodge defenders during his playing days, the Portuguese icon could not avoid questions about the shocking incident involving Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde. The altercation reportedly ended with Valverde hospitalized with head trauma and stitches in his head.

“They both have too much battery,” Figo joked, referencing the sponsor. “This isn’t normal. In a team environment, this cannot happen. But it won’t be the first or last time something like this happens. Frustration can push you into behavior that isn’t normal. I can’t say anything more. Real Madrid already released a statement.”

Figo responds to Mourinho speculation

The incident has intensified calls from some fans and pundits for a stronger disciplinarian figure on the Real Madrid bench. One name repeatedly linked to the conversation is José Mourinho.

Figo, however, rejected the idea that his fellow Portuguese coach is simply a “hard-line” manager and questioned whether that style truly works at Madrid.

“Mourinho is my friend, and I wish the best for everyone,” Figo said. “If coaching Real Madrid makes him happy, then welcome. But I didn’t know Mourinho had a heavy hand. I had him as a translator, as an assistant coach and as a head coach.”

“I don’t think Real Madrid needs a coach with a heavy hand. I’m not a supporter of that concept. You have to manage 25 egos. You need to understand soccer and know how to manage personalities so you can convince everyone to move in the same direction.”

“At Madrid, you need a coach with common sense and strong management skills.”

Figo says LaLiga title race is over

When asked about the upcoming El Clásico, Figo admitted he believes the LaLiga title race is effectively decided, though he still expects an unpredictable showdown between Spain’s two giants.

“The motivation won’t be the same, but Madrid is still playing for its image and dignity,” he said. “To win, they’ll need triple Duracell batteries.”

Figo also praised Barcelona’s recent progress under difficult financial conditions.

Barcelona is playing great soccer. They’ve had a very good season,” he said. “In the Champions League, they were eliminated because of small details. They have very talented young players, despite their financial problems limiting their ability to sign players.”

“They’re giving opportunities to La Masia players, and they’re doing a very good job.

Why El Clásico still feels different

Having played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, Figo understands better than most what makes El Clásico unique.

“These are two of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said. “They have the best players, and for the fans it’s something special too. They represent two great cities, and the rivalry goes beyond soccer.
