This is the reason why Man City will go to the top of the table if they beat Burnley on Wednesday
After Wednesday night, both City and Arsenal will have played 33 games as part of the 2025-26 Premier League season.
On Sunday last Manchester City secured a major boost in their bid to secure the 25-26 Premier League title as they beat table toppers Arsenal with a 2-1 win at home and now face struggling Burnley on Wednesday night.
Arsenal now hold just a three point lead over Pep Guardiola’s side as we enter the home straight of the current Premier League campaign.
By the end of play at Turf Moor both the Gunners and City will have played 33 games with just five matches outstanding.
Following their win over Arsenal, City cut the lead to just 3 points.
Arsenal: 70 points (33 games played)
Man City: 67 points (32 games played)
A win tomorrow gives City 3 points, bringing them level with Arsenal at 70 points.
Under Premier League rules, if points are tied, the first tiebreaker is goal difference. Arsenal currently have a plus 37 goal difference to City’s plus 36. Because Guardiola’s side are is only one goal behind in goal difference, any win against Burnley would naturally increase their goal difference to at least +37. If City wins by one goal (e.g., 1-0), they would tie Arsenal on both points (70) and have a goal difference of +37. In that scenario, the next tiebreaker is goals scored, where City already leads (66 vs 63). If City wins by two or more goals, they will take the lead outright via goal difference.
