Tigres vs Club América summary: score, goals and highlights | Liga MX Clausura 2023
América’s dominance over Tigres continued on Saturday, as goals by Jonathan Rodríguez and Leonardo Suárez gave Las Águilas a comfortable win at El Volcán.
Jonathan Rodríguez and Leonardo Suárez got the goals as Club América won 2-0 at Tigres on Saturday, a victory that provisionally pushes Las Águilas into the top four in the Clausura 2023 regular-season standings.
Defeat for Tigres is their eighth in a row in meetings with América, and completes a hugely disappointing week for Marco Antonio Ruiz’s men, who on Tuesday were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Orlando City in the CONCACAF Champions League.
América dominate Tigres from the off
From the get-go, América were the better team at the Estadio Universitario. Indeed, the visitors might have taken the lead inside two minutes, Rodríguez firing in a powerful shot that flashed just off target.
Tigres looked to hit back when Diego Lainez produced a penetrating run on the 15-minute mark, before feeding Juan Pablo Vigón in shooting space. Vigón sought to guide the ball inside goalkeeper Luis Malagón’s far post, but was denied by a goalline clearance by Emilio Lara.
Rodríguez’s precise finish gives América first-half advantage
Rodríguez then headed against the bar for América, before Fernando Ortiz’s men broke the deadlock to earn a deserved half-time lead. With 32 minutes on the clock, the Uruguayan met Suárez’s pass with a pinpoint first-time finish from the edge of the box, steering a low shot across Tigres keeper Nahuel Guzmán and into the far corner.
At the break, Ruiz shuffled his pack by introducing Javier Aquino and Luis Quiñones, but Tigres continued to prove largely ineffective in attack. And as the hosts desperately searched for an equaliser, a lethal América break sealed the points for Los Azulcremas.
Suárez secures victory on the break
With 12 minutes left, Diego Valdés and Suárez combined expertly on a lightning counter attack, the former squaring the ball in the area for the latter to stroke América’s second goal into the net. A furious home crowd made its feelings known to the Tigres players, with captain Guido Pizarro departing to loud jeers when he was substituted four minutes later.
Tigres, who stay second in Liga MX table for now, remain without a home win against América since 2017.
