Julián Álvarez: silence, pressure and a €500M standoff

Álvarez detonated the market when, at the start of the World Cup, he publicly said he was ready for “new challenges.” His comments came just days after Real Madrid revealed it had submitted a €150 million (about $163 million) offer for the Argentine striker — an offer Atlético Madrid immediately rejected. Madrid closed the file. Álvarez went quiet. And the uncertainty has only grown.

Meanwhile, Barcelona has kept the saga alive nonstop — leaks, calls, pressure, public comments. Atlético executives Miguel Ángel Gil and Enrique Cerezo have openly criticized Barça’s behavior, calling it inappropriate and destabilizing. From New York, Joan Laporta insists he still wants Álvarez, but warns the offer won’t stay on the table forever.

The problem? Álvarez wants to leave. Atlético refuses to negotiate unless someone pays his €500 million ($545 million) release clause — a figure completely outside market reality. Cerezo’s famous line, “players end up where they want to be,” suddenly feels impossible to apply.

Michael Olise: a similar desire, a very different club response

Olise’s situation mirrors Álvarez’s in one way: he wants a new challenge. But the behavior of the clubs involved couldn’t be more different.

Rumors linked the French international to Real Madrid during the club’s election cycle, but Florentino Pérez moved quickly to shut everything down. First, he called Bayern Munich, then issued a public statement denying any involvement in a potential transfer.

Madrid knows Bayern — a friendly club — is dealing with internal problems, and refuses to add fuel to the fire.

Even so, leaks from inside the French national team camp suggested Olise had spoken about Madrid. The club was stunned and again distanced itself completely from the rumor.

A long summer ahead

There’s still a month and a half left in the transfer window. At Real Madrid, the priority remains unchanged:

Madrid believes its squad is strong enough to compete at the highest level again.

But Atlético and Bayern face real pressure. Both clubs insist they won’t sell. Barcelona openly pushes for Álvarez. Madrid privately denies any interest in Olise. Atlético talks about €500 million, while rumors around Bayern mention €223 million ($243 million) — a fee that would break transfer records.
