Tyler Adams says he has “no idea” who is going to be USMNT captain

The Leeds United midfielder says Gregg Berhalter has not yet told the team who will wear the armband at the World Cup.

One of the more curious aspects of the USMNT in the build-up the World Cup, is not the squad list, nor the kit numbers, but who will wear the captain’s armband when they walk out of the tunnel on 21 November against Wales. Like many things, it doesn’t bother Tyler Adams, the midfield enforcer for both the USMNT and Premier League side Leeds United.

When questioned by journalists regarding Berhalter’s decision not to reveal the team captain just yet, Adams responded by saying “we have no idea who the captain is going to be yet”. Adams himself is one of the candidates, with the midfielder enjoying a stellar first season in the Premier League at Leeds United. Fellow American and Leeds manager Jesse Marsch brought him to the club from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022.

“Since Gregg has taken over”, he continued, “it has been a shared responsibility amongst our ‘leadership council’ and we have a bunch of guys that can wear the armband. We all lead in various ways, of course, I’ve worn at times and feel very comfortable wearing it but I have total belief in my teammates.”

Not scared of Wales

Tyler Adams spoke about the USMNT’s opening game at the World Cup, which will be his first at the tournament, and said that his side “Wales’ style of play is very distinctive, we have watched a lot of videos...we are very familiar with their players and their tactics and the threat that they bring.”
