DARREN STAPLES

Manchester United are back. And if there is one man behind Old Trafford feeling like the Theater of Dreams again, it is Michael Carrick. He returned as an interim through the end of the season, but has earned the job with results, three straight wins and 18 in 35 league games, to lead the Red Devils back into the biggest European competition. With this chaotic win in the English clásico, Manchester United are officially back in the Champions League. The math is done. But that was not Carrick’s only victory at Old Trafford.

At a team level, Carrick has brought structure and clarity. Bruno Fernandes leads a dynamic attack in which Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško continue to produce. Individually, his biggest success has been restoring a unique talent pushed aside under Ruben Amorim. Kobbie Mainoo’s winner was as much the coach’s as the player’s. United suffered through their own mistakes and a typically brilliant display from Dominik Szoboszlai, but this clásico belonged to the Red Devils. Another blow for Arne Slot.

United steamroll early

Even if Liverpool had come out more aggressively, the version of United on display in the first half would likely have overwhelmed them anyway. The opener came in the 6th minute from a corner, but United’s real weapon was their transition game. Every counterattack put the visitors under pressure.

That is how the second goal arrived. With space to run into, United’s front line looked dangerous. Just eight minutes after Cunha celebrated his opener, he was involved again as Šeško made it 2-0. Freddie Woodman made two strong saves, but on the second the ball deflected off the Slovenian striker and in. It has not been a kind season for Liverpool’s goalkeepers.

Cody Gakpo had a chance to pull one back before halftime, while Fernandes nearly made it 3-0 with a shot that skimmed the post after another fast break.

Two gifts and a gem

If the first half was wild, the second was even more chaotic, largely due to United. Something changed at halftime, and Carrick’s side suddenly began making costly mistakes. First Amad Diallo and then Senne Lammens handed Liverpool a way back.

Liverpool went from 2-0 down to 2-2 in a flash. Szoboszlai intercepted a poor pass, drove forward, and finished calmly to make it 2-1 in the 47th minute. Nine minutes later, Gakpo capitalized on another error. Lammens misplayed the ball out from the back, gifting possession to Alexis Mac Allister, who set up Szoboszlai, and then Gakpo tapped in.

Liverpool nearly completed the comeback, but Lammens atoned with a crucial save to deny Arne Slot’s Liverpool a third.

Mainoo has the final word

This game still had one more twist. It had to be Kobbie Mainoo, the academy product overlooked under Amorim and revived by Carrick, who signed a contract extension through 2031 just days ago. Chances came for Casemiro and Rio Ngumoha, but it was Mainoo who delivered.

After a poor clearance from Mac Allister, the midfielder struck from the edge of the box, guiding the ball inside the post with precision. The goal sealed a 3-2 win and confirmed Manchester United’s long-awaited return to the Champions League.
