Urgent changes are on the way at Real Madrid
After missing out on major silverware in their worst season in years, Los Blancos are set to make big decisions ahead of 2026/27.
What now? That’s the question being asked by Real Madrid supporters - and even by those who aren’t. Los Blancos still have three chapters left to play before closing the book on what has been their worst season in two decades, but the decisions are coming fast, cascading one after another with real urgency. The crisis at the club is unmistakable, and the people in charge at Madrid know it.
The performance in El Clásico captured the essence of this campaign: a Madrid side devoid of spirit and identity, riddled with glaring shortcomings, and reduced to helpless spectators as Barcelona celebrated a LaLiga title right in their faces.
Real changes incoming
The starting point is clear: a new head coach. The ball is in José Mourinho’s court. He knows everything - everything that’s happened this season, and even more so the events of recent days, as this outlet has reported. Mourinho has detailed reports on every single player. If the Portuguese manager says yes, the job is his. He’s fully aware that the club’s president is ready to hand him the reins once again.
Mourinho is weighing whether the time has come for one last dance, fully aware that the current squad will form the backbone of next season’s Real Madrid. Reinforcements are expected to target the back line more than any other area. At Valdebebas, the talk is of three, possibly four, essential signings to shore up a unit that is currently defined by uncertainty.
Club president Florentino Pérez and his inner circle believe there is still quality in the squad. Their internal analysis suggests that several players who regressed under Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa can rediscover their best form with the right stimulus from the bench. That belief is shared both publicly and behind closed doors. There is also acknowledgment that structural changes within the club’s sporting department may be necessary.
Injury concerns surrounding players like Éder Militão and Ferland Mendy - both under contract but surrounded by doubt - compound the issues. Add to that David Alaba’s departure, the uncertain future of Dani Carvajal, lingering questions about Raúl Asencio, and the puzzling absence of Álvaro Carreras in the final stretch of the season. The unknowns are piling up, forcing the club to turn to the market. This time, the radar is focused more on proven talent, with fewer gambles on untested prospects.
Reinforcing the attack
Nico Paz and Endrick will return to strengthen the forward line, an area club executives believe requires minimal adjustment. The attacking core is set to revolve around the trio of Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé.
However, recent events involving Fede Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni - a pair who have grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons - have opened the door to potential changes in midfield. Still, the urgency there pales in comparison to the defensive overhaul, where Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen and Carreras are the players currently viewed as definite keeps.
