US Open Cup throws up LAFC-Galaxy El Trafico derby clash
16 teams remain in contention for the 2023 Lamar Hunt Open Cup with an LA derby and a Colorado vs Real Salt Lake being the standout ties.
Now in its 108th year, the 2023 US Open Cup has reached the Round of 16 stage.
Both the draw for this stage along with the subsequent rounds that lead to the final was made on Thursday night with just two non MLS sides remaining in the competition. Both Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Birmingham Legion representing lower league the USL Championship (Div. II) were given home advantage against MLS opposition.
In regional based matchups, Pittsburgh Riverhounds will face MLS side Columbus Crew (MLS) at the Highmark Stadium with the Alabama based Birmingham Legion FC set to face Charlotte FC (MLS).
Two derby games
LA Galaxy beat their city rivals at this stage of the tournament last year, the Black and Gold can count on home advantage this season as they will look to push on in what’s proving to be a positive season for Steve Cherundolo’s side as they look forward to a Concacaf Champions League final against Liga MX side Club Leon.
Colorado Rapids will face Real Salt Lake will in their Rocky Mountain rivalry and stage their first Open Cup meeting since 2007.
All games are scheduled to be played on 23/24 May.
