USWNT icon Alex Morgan announces pregnancy and retirement from soccer
After an illustrious career, the two-time US Soccer Athlete of the Year will play her final game this weekend for the San Diego Wave.
Alex Morgan, one of the United States’ most decorated soccer players, has announced her decision to retire, ending her 15-year professional career. The 35-year-old also revealed that she is pregnant with her second child.
“I grew up on this team, it was so much more than soccer,” Morgan said of the national team that she represented so many times. “It was the friendships and the unwavering respect and support among each other, the relentless push for global investment in women’s sports, and the pivotal moments of success both on and off the field.”
“I am so incredibly honored to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years. I learned so much about myself in that time and so much of that is a credit to my teammates and our fans.”
Morgan ended her USWNT career with 123 goals and 53 assists, making an incredible 224 appearances for the national team.
When is Alex Morgan’s last game?
Morgan will take to the field one last time this weekend, her final game for the San Diego Wave in the National Women’s Soccer League. She joined the team in 2022 after ending her third stint with the Orlando Pride.
The San Diego Wave will host the North Carolina Courage at SnapDragon Stadium on Sunday evening. The Wave are currently 12th in the table, five points adrift of qualification for the finals series.
In a statement confirming her retirement Morgan wrote that she was optimistic about the future of women’s soccer in the United States, citing her pride to have represented the national team so many times: “I am so incredibly honored to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years.”
“I learned so much about myself in that time and so much of that is a credit to my teammates and our fans. I feel immense pride in where this team is headed, and I will forever be a fan of the USWNT. My desire for success may have always driven me, but what I got in return was more than I could have ever asked and hoped for.”
