Inter Miami is starting over once again. On Tuesday, the reigning MLS champions surprised many by announcing that Javier Mascherano had stepped down as head coach of the Herons.

Mascherano’s resignation marks a turning point for Inter Miami. The project he began last season, when he took over from Gerardo “Tata” Martino, had appeared to be on track, delivering an MLS Cup title and a Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal. However, in this year’s competition, the team was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Nashville.

Following Mascherano’s exit, the club confirmed in a statement that Argentine Ángel Guillermo Hoyos will replace the former midfielder, at least on an interim basis.

“Guillermo Hoyos will take over as head coach of the first team for the upcoming matches,” the club shared on its official website after confirming Mascherano’s departure.

Who is Guillermo Hoyos, Inter Miami’s new interim head coach?

Hoyos will step away from his role as Inter Miami’s sporting director to take over as interim coach, marking a return to the sidelines after his most recent spell in Bolivia, where he managed Oriente Petrolero in 2023.

During that stint, Hoyos oversaw 13 matches, winning just one, drawing four, and losing eight, results that brought his brief tenure to an end.

Before that, Hoyos managed Talleres de Córdoba in Argentina, Aldosivi, and had a spell in Liga MX with Atlas. Across those roles, he coached a total of 57 matches, recording 15 wins, 12 draws, and 28 losses. He will now look to turn those numbers around in Miami and position the team well ahead of the appointment of a permanent head coach, a process the club is already working on.

More changes at Inter Miami following Mascherano’s departure

Mascherano’s exit and Hoyos’ appointment are not the only moves announced by the Fort Lauderdale club on Tuesday.

The front office, led by Jorge Mas and David Beckham, also confirmed that Alberto Marrero will step down as director of football to become the club’s new sporting director, a role previously held by Hoyos.
