USWNT 5 vs. 0 Jamaica national team summary: stats and highlights CONCACAF W Championship
The United States Women’s National Team are leaders of Group A, and have a foot and a half in the 2023 World Cup after a thumping win over the Reggae Girlz of Jamaica. Sofia Smith was brilliant to start the match and set the tone in the 5-0 victory on Thursday night.
Rapinoe in D.C. for a special occaion
USA Head coach Vlatko Andonovski went with a young squad as Alex Morgan and Becky Sauerbrunn sat, and Megan Rapinoe was in Washington to collect her Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The task was always going to be tough for the Jamaican’s who had never scored against the US team before. Just a couple minutes in Sofia Smith made it an even steeper hill to climb with a brilliant goal in the fifth minute.
Smith chased a ball down on the right side of the area, and sombreroed it over a defender and then half volleyed the effort with the outside of her foot to slide it past the keeper Rebecca Spencer for the opener.
Smith's opener was a beauty
Smith chased a ball down on the right side of the area, and sombreroed it over a defender and then half volleyed the effort with the outside of her foot to slide it past the keeper Rebecca Spencer for the opener.
Just three minutes later Smith was played a ball over the top which she ran on to and got there just before the keeper and played a gorgeous dink over the top of Spencer’s head for a brace in the first eight minutes.
There were plenty of chances to add to that lead through the first 45 minutes, but a couple of goals were disallowed due to offside, although one scored by Ashley Hatch was onside after looking at the replay, but it was kept off the board.
US shuts the door in the second half
Smith was taken off at the halftime break, and it was time for Rose Lavelle to step up and do the scoring off a wonderful cross right in front of the face of goal from Ashley Sanchez. Lavelle made no mistake waiting all alone on the back post for the 58th minute goal.
Kristie Mewis smashed a spot kick after Margaret Purce weaved in the box and was taken down by a couple of Jamaican defenders. Just minutes later Mallory Pugh served a great ball into Trinity Rodman from the right side of the box and Rodman finished with poised with the keeper crashing in for the 5-0.
The US must now wait for the end of the Mexico vs. Haiti win to see if they get an early qualification for World Cup 2023. If Haiti beat Mexico the US will get the top spot in the Group and stamp their ticket to World Cup in Australia/New Zealand.
The USWNT’s next game in Monday at 10 p.m. ET against Mexico.
Alex Morgan may not have played tonight, but she still made this young kid's dream come true.
Tirinity Rodman making noise at the age of 20.
One of the highlights of the night didn't happen at the Estadio BBVA in Mexico, it was happening in Washington D.C. where Megan Rapinoe was collecting her Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Tirinity Rodman tucked in the fifth and final goal to secure the convincing win over Jamaica.
Margaret Purce set up a Kristie Mewis goal from the spot after a strong weaving run inside of the box.
Rose Lavelle was just waiting on the back post off of this wonderful pass from Ashley Sanchez.
Smith did it again just three minutes later, with a classy touch over the keeper for her brace before the 10th minute.
Sofia Smith started this match off with a bang with a brilliant bit of play. Sombrero over a defender and then an outside the foot, curling effort that nestled into the side netting.
It's all over here from Estadio BBVA!! The United States with a thumping defeat over Jamaica, and they will wait to see if they qualify for the World Cup by the end of the night.
Five minutes of stoppage time added on.
Mewis steps to the spot and tucks hit home for number four. She smacked it into the right side netting, Spencer went left but even if she guessed right she wouldn't have had a chance.
Purce taken down in the area and the ref points at the spot! Purce took over in the midfield and had a strong weaving run into the area.
Ten minutes remaining from Estadio BBVA! USA is going to crusie to victroy.
Korniack had it fall for her in perfect position but couldn't keep her effort down. Great chance again. While USA will be happy with the way they played their finishing has been far from perfect.
Purce cuts in from the end line and takes it on her own, but Spencer makes the save yet again.
Great ball in from Sanchez and Lavelle knows what to do with the rest. It's 3-0, but it could be so much more.
Sanchez this time getting a perfect ball delivered to her from Sonnet. The header in behind the defense was just high of the cross bar.
12-2 shot advantage for the US.
Pugh had another one right in front of the mouth of goal that she kept a bit to tight to the keeper and Spencer was up to the task. If it wasn't for the Jamaica keeper, this match would have been busted wide open long ago.
After the third goal, the pace of play has somewhat slowed. Remember the US can qualify for the World Cup if Mexico and Haiti draw later tonight. With the goal differential the US team is basically a lock to qualify, even on the off chance that they lose the third game.
Sanchez looking for the near post on her effort from outside the box.
Hatch's night is done, and she'll be frustrated not leave the pitch with a goal under her belt.
Lavelle makes it three after a perfect ball across the face of goal. Spencer had a chance at the save, but Lavelle was thoughtful with her finish keeping it low and to the far post.
Horan with a glancing header just wide off the set piece. Spencer did get a finger to it, a lovely save that's made even sweeter after it's ruled a goal kick.
Hatch with another bit of brilliance, but it just isn't her day. A looping ball was taken beautifully off her chest and the volley raced past the keeper, only to be denied by the back post.
The second half is under way, and let's see if the United States continutes to press like we saw them do in the first 45.
Smith has been subbed out after the break, so her bid for a hat trick has been cut short.
The second goal came just minutes later, and while it may be overshadowed by the opener, Smith's finish was cool and calm with the keeper closing in.
I could watch this opener from Smith all night. Brilliant play from the winger.
The first half comes to a close and the USWNT is going into the break with a 2-0 lead, but it really could have been so many more. Plenty of chances, a couple for Pugh, a couple for Hatch but Jamaica are still within striking distance after 45 minutes.
Sanchez with a lovely ball in from the near side and she was looking for Hatch who was just a hair away. Any touch on that ball in was going to be trouble, but Spencer dealt with the danger.
Shaw launches a prayer from well outside the area, but it was always rising. Not much happening for Jamaica in the attacking third, so why not have a go.
There will be four minutes of extra time.
Smith was so unselfish with space in front of goal, laying it off to Pugh who had a disappointing effort straight at Spencer.
Beautiful ball in by Pugh, but it was sent away as fro as Fox who collected outside of the box and skimmed the crossbar.
Smith had a chance for her hat trick after settling a pass on the left side of the area, but sent it skyward.
Jamaica with their first set piece and the danger is dealt with by the USA defensive unit. The Reggae Girlz have to take advantage of those set pieces. They have some big bodies that could create problems for the US.
Hatch had it bounce to her in the small box, this time the angle was very tight. Did the best she could to force a save, but it was always a tought angle to steer into the back of the net.
Another brilliant attack from the USWNT! Huerta serves a perfect ball into the back post where Pugh was waiting to guide it into the net.
But after a review of the offside, the goal is taken away.
I apologize, I thought there was no VAR, but they are able to look at offsides or not. Not sure what happened on the Hatch goal that was taken away.
Off the corner kick it fell for Hatch who turned on the half volley with her back to goal, but bangs it off the crossbar and Jamaica are lucky to still only be down 2-0
Terriblle ball from the back on a short goal kick that turns into a chance for Pugh, and the rebound was blocked by Spencer.
Beautiful through ball played into Hatch from Smith, but a decent bit of defending to hold off Hatch to extinguish the danger.
There aren't many goals that will top Smith's opener of the night, but this one wasn't too shabby either. Classy finish on the first touch.
If Jamiaca are not careful, this could get very ugly, very quickly. They need to string a pass or two together if only just to stop chasing for a couple seconds.
Jamaica's backs were against the ropes starting off this game, and after 14 minutes the task has gone from tough to nearly impossible
Hatch thought she had the United States' third goal, but it was waved offside. Looking at the replay again she was not offside in the slightest, but there is no VAR in this competition so that goal will stay off the board.
Have a look at this fabulous opener from Smith.
Smith has 8 goals and 3 assists in 17 caps for USA
SMITH WITH ANOTHER ONE!!! This time a ball was played over the top of her head and got there before the keeper to dink it over the top! Lovely class again from Smith who has a brace in the first eight minutes.
GOLAZOOOO!!! SOPHIA SMITH WITH A STROKE OF GENIUS!!! SHE FLICKED IT OVER A DEFENDERS HEAD AND TUCKED IT PAST THE KEEPER WITH THE OUTSIDE OF HER FOOT!!!!
Jamaica not showing any nerves knocking the ball around the pitch early on. That will give them confidence going on. They can't get discouraged or break that plan if the USA starts to find their groove.
Megan Rapinoe is not stranger to having medals put around her neck, but this one has to be one of the most special she has ever recieved.
Jamaica with the first shot of the match. It was a tame effort from Brown, easily taked by the keeper Naeher.

Jamaica had a somewhat surprising win over the hosts, Mexico, in the opening match of the group stages. Khadija “Bunny” Shaw had the winner with a beautiful flicked on header that nestled inside the post off of a free kick to secure the 1-0 win for the Jamaicans.
Have a look at this beauty of a goal by Alex Morgan who tucked it in the front post on the most deft of flicks.
