Wayne Rooney, the current manager of DC United in Major League Soccer has made things clear: his desire is to continue as a head coach, but in European football. The 37-year-old Englishman will lead the All-Star team against Arsenal on July 19 but has spoken about where he sees himself in the near future, once his time in MLS comes to an end.

In 2018, Rooney arrived as a star player for DC United, where he managed to rack up 25 goals and 14 assists; 4 years later, he was made manager of the side he had once led on the field, replacing the outgoing Hernán Losada.

Rooney says MLS experience will help towards Europe return

My aspiration is to manage at an elite European club someday, and in those environments, you’re working with very diverse teams with elite professionals from all over the world.

“I’ve found I could actually get that experience here, which helps me a lot. At DC United, for example, we’ve got players from more than a dozen nations, representing different cultures, religions, and backgrounds.

So there’s different challenges and lessons to be gained from that, and working with the All-Stars, the very best MLS has to offer, adds to that immensely. Like me, I know my DC United players Christian Benteke and Tyler Miller are excited to represent our club”, he told MLS Soccer.
