Rodrygo struck for Real Madrid faster than it took the AS USA Twitter boffin to put out a kick-off tweet. Madrid took on Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final and a beautiful take-on from Vinicius was followed up by a low cross across the box which was tapped in by Rodrygo, who has an eye and a leg for scoring big goals in white shirts. At 106 seconds, it definitely caused many to jump to conclusions and assume that Madrid’s lightning start was the fastest ever - but is it true?

Was Rodrygo’s goal the quickest ever?

Well, not entirely. Rodrigo’s early strike is fired in at number two on the all-time quickest goals in the Copa del Rey final. The winner of the particular award, according to the ever-reliable MisterChip on Twitter, goes to a certain Raúl Tamudo of Espanyol, who scored against Real Zaragoza in 2006 after just 87 seconds (Espanyol went on to win 4-1). However, Rodrygo does go top on one of the Madrid history scorers’ boards, as it’s the fastest Copa del Rey final goal in a Real Madrid shirt since 1946.

Osasuna’s task was already huge, but now with the early strike it seems like the team will have to dig deeper to find a way through. Vinicius has had that devastating effect on plenty of teams this season, so it shouldn’t get them too down. Plus, Ceballos is out injured and they’ve got history on their side regarding Karim Benzema.
