What they’re wearing: Liga MX 2023 Apertura jerseys
With the new season set to get underway this weekend, we look at the new jerseys the 18 Liga MX sides will wear during the new campaign.
No sooner has the dust settled on Tigres winning the Liga MX 2023 Clausura trophy, a new campaign is upon is with Club America and FC Juarez set to open the 2023 Apertura season at the Estadio Azteca.
The Apertura 2023 season will see a series of modifications relating to the postseason as now only the top 10 teams are involved as opposed to 12 with a NBA style play-in series of games used to determine which teams accompany the top six in the postseason.
It all winds down on 17 December when we discover which side will be crowned Mexican champions but ahead of the new season, let’s take a look at the shirts the 18 clubs will use as part of the campaign.
Club América (Nike)
The ‘Aguilas’ open the season at home at the Estadio Azteca as the face FC Juarez and unveil their new season shirts on 28 June with the home jersey set to make it’s on field debut on Friday.
Atlas FC have moved from the traditional half and half red/black approach for a diagonal break up of the shirt. The away shirt is a darker hue of red and, to be honest colour-wise is not a million miles removed from the home colours.
Atletico San Luis (Sporelli)
The side from San Luis Potosi remain faithful to their red and white stripes with the away number a mustard yellow with blue fringes. ‘Los Atleticos’ are just one of a handful of Mexican sides where their shirt is smothered in publicity.
Cruz Azul (Prima)
The ‘Maquina’ end their relationship with Spanish kit manufacturer Joma and move to local brand Prima for the 2023 Apertura with the result pleasing royal blue home kit along with a sky away number.
Chivas came agonisingly close to winning the 2023 Clausura title but were pipped to the post by Tigres. Veljko Paunovic’s men will hope to maintain their solid run of form with a new ‘goat-horn’ inspired jersey from long term associate Puma. No away shirt has been presented for the Apertura 2023 as yet.
The ‘Bravos’ unveiled their new season playing kits on Wednesday 28 June and will use the new jersey as they head to the capital on Friday night for the season opener at the Azteca.
Fresh from their Concacaf Champions League win over MLS side LAFC, ‘La Fiera’ wll sport a new green shirt as they also look forward to participating at the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup in December.
Prima have done a solid job with both home and away jerseys for the side from Sinaloa and the newest Liga MX franchise now need to turn things around on the pitch.
Rayados return to a traditional blue and white striped combo for the new season home jersey with the 2023/24 away shirt presented by Puma on 29 July featuring a navy and royal blue diagonal sash.
Celebrating their centenary this year, Prima are well off the mark with these two jerseys which fail to set the pulse racing. Add on excessive advertising and we have candidates for the poorest 2023 Apertura shirts.
Los Tuzos are another club who suffer from an excessive amount of shirt sponsorship with decent efforts from Charly smothered by excessive amounts of branding.
As yet, there is no information as to when the 2023 Apertura season home and away Puebla jerseys will be launched but images are being leaked via social media.
Pumas UNAM (Nike)
Nike have launched the latest incarnation of the distinctive Pumas jersey with the large head dominating the front. The comic book style has received a mixed reaction from fans of the university side.
Looking to improve recent disappointing seasons, the ‘Gallos Blancos’ will sport a mainly white shirt for the Apertura 20 season with a decent looking away shirt blighted by excessive sponsors.
Santos Laguna (Charly)
Another team that form part of the Charly portfolio, the Torreon based side opt for a variation on their classic green and white hooped shirt that has endeared the club to fans of Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic.
Tigres UANL (Adidas)
Looking to secure their silverware after winning the Clausura 2023 and Copa de Campeones, Tigres will face LAFC in September for the Campeones Cup and will spot their new Adidas jersey.
Simple, plain, effective and not drowned in sponsorship, the new season Xolos shirts by Charly are some of the finest in Liga MX this season.
Toluca (New Balance)
The Red Devils switch from Under Armour to New Balance and as yet details of the new jersey are still outstanding.
