Under new head coach Hansi Flick, Barça are the early pacesetters in LaLiga, having won seven of their first eight games. In Europe’s top club competition, however, the Blaugrana kicked off their campaign with defeat at Monaco on September 19, George Ilenikhena’s 71st-minute goal earning the Ligue 1 club a 2-1 victory at Stade Louis II.

And Barça now head into matchday two having been dealt a major injury blow, after goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury in the team’s LaLiga win over Villarreal just over a week ago. The German is expected to be sidelined for around eight to nine months.

Meanwhile, Young Boys also lost their Champions League opener, suffering a 3-0 home defeat to Premier League side Aston Villa on September 17. In their first year under Patrick Rahmen, the Swiss champions have made a poor start to the season in both domestic and European soccer: in the league, they have won just one game out of eight and sit 11th.

How does the new UCL format work?

Starting this season, UEFA has dispensed with the group-stage format in the Champions League, instead introducing a league phase in which each team plays eight games (four at home, four away) against eight different clubs. Rather than being placed in groups of four, all clubs will be ranked in one 36-team table.

After eight games, the top eight teams in the league phase will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the clubs ranked ninth to 24th will have to negotiate a playoff round to reach the knockout stage proper.
