Just 24 hours after Nottingham Forest and Everton learned that they are under more scrutiny by the English Premier League for not complying with the Sustainability and Benefits rules of the competition, Premier League CEO Richard Masters appeared before the Committee of MPs of the Culture and Sport Commission. He detailed how the investigation into these two clubs unfolded.

More importantly, Masters revealed that a date has been set to adjudicate the case of Manchester City.

Man City date in court known but not confirmed

Manchester City has been accused by the ethics committee of the English Premier League of committing 115 financial infractions. The investigation, which began in 2018, traces back to 2009 when the alleged violations by City supposedly started. An independent commission has been conducting the investigation, and the club has had the opportunity to appeal. The case seemed to be dragging on indefinitely, but now, Masters has shed light on the City’s case.

“There is a date for the case, but I cannot tell you when it is because it is confidential,” stated the executive before British parliamentarians.

Media outlets like The Times have hastened to indicate that it will be this spring when Manchester City learns whether it will face sanctions for violating financial rules on 115 occasions, as accused in February 2023. The potential sanctions could be either sporting (potentially points deduction or exclusive) or financial. This decision could well come before the conclusion of the 2023-24 season where City currently hold second position in the table with 43 points, trailing leaders Liverpool by two points.

Clearly a reduction in points could have serious ramifications not only for title aspirations but also for continuation in the Champions League in future seasons.
