La Liga

Hansi Flick is two for two in both of his La Liga campaigns since arriving on the Barcelona touchline and is now setting his sights on the club record.

The party is on in Catalunya after Barcelona’s El Clasico win that secured them their 29th La Liga title and third in their last four years. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has had a brilliant start to his career at the Camp Nou, but he’s still got a way to go to catch up to the winningest Barcelona manager in league history.

Two for two for Flick

Flick has only been at the club for two years after leaving the German national team in 2023. He took over for Xavi Hernandez after what was a tumultuous ending to the club legends career as Barca manager. Flick came in and immediately gave the club the stability they were searching for especially in the domestic league.

They won last year’s league title by four points, and this year they have a chance to level the points record and break the record for biggest points difference between the winner of the league and the runners up. If they win their remaining three matches, they would finish with 100 points and depending what Real Madrid do from here until the finish line they could break the 15 points difference Barca won the title with over Real Madrid in the 2012-13 season.

If they were to achieve that, it was would an even more impressive start to Flick’s two years with the club but he would still have a long way to go before becoming the Barca manager with the most league titles in club history. Recent history would suggest that Pep Guardiola is the most successful Cule manager in the league, but those who are old enough to remember will know that Johann Cruyff won four league titles with Barcelona.

Cruyff the club legend, Muñoz the Liga legend

The dutch legend spent eight years at the club and set the record for most matches as manager of the club. In his eight seasons was in charge of Barcelona for 430 matches, with a record 250 wins, 97 draws and 83 losses. He was appointed manager in 1988 but had to wait three seasons before winning his first league title in the 1990-91 season.

Once he broke the seal, Cruyff and Barcelona rattled off four straight La Liga titles. He became the winningest manager in the club’s illustrious history with those four La Liga titles. He would stay there for two more years after winning his last league title, but was left without a title for his final two seasons.

Pep Guardiola was only at Barcelona half the time that Cruyff was on the touch line at the Camp Nou, but in those four years he won 3 La Liga titles, and two UEFA Champions League titles. He left after four years after one of the most successful stints in the club history. He won 14 titles in his four years there, as opposed to Cruyff’s 11 titles in eight years.

While Flick is on an excellent pace, he’s still got a lot of work to do to catch up to Pep Guardiola, Johan Cruyff and the winningest coach in La Liga history. That would be Real Madrid’s Miguel Muñoz, who won nine league titles in a decade and a half with Los Blancos. He won five straight from 1960-1965 and won another four before leaving the club in 1974.
